I'am looking for two or three variegated JM as landscape threes. What would be for you the "best" HARDY variegated jms for a dappled shade spot ( I have already Butterfly for years and Ukigumo recently).

I put "Peach and Cream" and "Hygasa Yama" on the top of my list, they are supposed to be reliable cv and ones quite easy to find.

Not sure I would consider Peaches & Cream as 'variegated'. My favorites are 'Taiyo Nishiki', 'Kotobuki' , and 'Shojo no mai'. 'Taiyo nishiki' is particularly vigorous, and can have variegated bark as well. The new stems are brilliant red. I find it outstanding.

'Hana Matoi' is a pretty dissectum if you want some variety in form.

    Thanks for your answers.
Kaintan4, for Vertrees Toya nishiki (syn : Toyama Nishiki) is " an non robust maple (which) needs considerable cares and attention" Does it perform much better in your area ? I will add Shosho no Maï in my list. I agree with you, Peach and cream would be more classified in the reticulata group but I wanted to simplify in order to get the maximum of you best choices.

Dougie , I like very much Hana Matoï. Does it perform quite well in your garden ?

I don't think 'Taiyo nishiki' and 'Toyama nishiki' are the same plant.

Yes, Hana Matoi has done quite well in my garden, although you should know that it is a weeper that doesn't get over 3-4 feet tall at maturity.

You are right : In the third edition of vertrees' JM you can read for Toyama Nishiki :
" The following are also considered synonyms, alternate spellings, or mispellings of this cultivar - 'Sotoyama Nishiki', 'Toya Nishiki, and 'Yamato Nishiki' "

I got confused with TOYA Nishiki.

I love Manyo no sato - very interesting color combo (purple and green), with differently shaped leaves too. Hana matoi is beautiful as well (mine's about ready to pop, can't wait!).

    Hi Christophe,

I live in the blazing hot northern central valley of California. I grow Peaches and Cream, Hana Matoi, and Hygasa Yama in pots. The first two are in a pergola type area and get some sunlight each day. The Hygasa is in a pot under a Magnolia tree and gets morning sun and some late day sun. All do pretty well given the heat here - although they can get a little burnt tips when weather hits 100+ for a couple weeks like last year. They all seem to be very durable trees and beautiful to look at too. The Hygasa really wants to grow - even in a pot, so I cut it back pretty hard each year.

Here are some pictures of them. My favorite spring tree is the Hygasa, it just has so many different colors and changes daily.

    Me again,

I also grow Toyama nishiki and Aka Shigitatsu Sawa in pots - right next to each other. Both seem to do very well given plenty of water and no direct sunlight. Here are a couple pictures. Sorry for the lighting, its about to rain here and no sun to highlight the colors. The Toyama is just all green right now, but later it will change.

I am late to respond and it seems you have made up your mind. For someone who maybe considering a variegated Japanese maple, or someone looking for ideas this spring, here are a few varieties that I have growing well in my garden.

Acer palmatum 'Goshiki shidare' - White, pink, purple, green, and hints of reds; spring colors give way to green and white in summer:

There are a lot of great variegated Japanese black and white pines too. I just started collecting last year, so I will have some pics this season. Here is an example of a Dragon's eye black pine:

Amber ghost is one of my favorite chooses. It has great color and grows to be a well structured tree. Hana matoi does keep it's variegation in full sun here in th PNW but we have limited full sun. Peaches and Cream (non first ghost type) is a winner. The similar trees Gwen's Delight and Geisha Gone Wild are very popular for their late summer color.
The white ones like Sister Ghost, Shigitatsu sawa and filigree are also wonderful but need protection from the sun.

'Matsugae' hardy as can be. Amazing fall color (at times). A very sturdy and elegant cultivar.

What do you mean with "non first ghost" ? How to know which type is sold ?

I have a Toyama Nishiki that is in mostly shade. It is a delicate looking tree but has very attractive and unusual variegation. This is the second year in this location and the growth this spring has been quite robust.

    Hello Christophe

Been a sleep at the wheel. To answer your question is a bit slippery. So my observation is this, there are now two different P&C out there there is the orginal which has the coloration similar to First Ghost in color and in leaf shape and structure. The second form is very much different and is not similar to most all others. It has a stronger peach color in spring. It's branches have a more upright nature, the bark tends to have a yellow color, the leaves lay flat with no droopiness and the leaf shape is more of an anoemun style.
