So I'm based in the UK and got an Acer this year that was tagged as Acer palmatum 'Autumn glory', I thought it was correct because it looks like the Autumn glory that Barthelemy sells. However, I have seen other places where Autumn glory is a totally different tree, like in the book Japanese maples by Gregory and Vertrees or the one Hippopottering sells, where it looks totally different.

I saw there was no post for it under the Acer palmatum cultivars section so thought I would make this one to ask.

In the spring it emerges a dark maroon then over the summer it goes green, you can see in the photos by the end of May it starts going green. It doesn't have its autumn colour yet but I think it is supposed to go a beautiful red (hence the name).

Are there two different cultivars with the same name? Has one been mislabelled? What is the one that I have then? I looks quite distinct and not really seen anything like it but if anyone knows that would be greatly appreciated.

You're right that the colour is similar, but there seem to be more leaf lobes on Johin and the leaf incisions seem deeper. Here is a picture of my little Johin and they seem quite different to me.

I just read Vertrees' description of Autumn Glory (I am unfamiliar with the cultivar), and it sounds like he's saying there are multiple different trees that have been released to the market with that name. So maybe indeed your tree is simply one of those, and different from other Autumn Glories that you have seen.

I don't think Johin (which sadly is not named Jōhin: johin means a catholic ordination, jōhin means "elegant". Whoops.) Though it does resemble in Spring, your 'Johin' looks correct.

There are both a palmutum and japonicum of 'Autumn Glory'

It's not that unusual for some JMs to come out with very dark leaves in Spring, which then turn green. It's a nice feature, but sometimes confusing (e.g. Ven's Red). Your plant looks like Matt & Tim's, I've never seen the cv though. -E
