Whitcomb (Prunus Subhirtella 'Whitcomb') There are 46 Whitcomb cherry blossom trees are blooming at South slope Burnaby now. lovely Whitcombs are on the both sides of Sussex Avenue between Imperial St. and all the way down to Marine Drive.
@Jacqueline Lee saw these on a nicer day than when I made a stop to see them today on my way to visit a friend. Here are rainy day flowers. I had to look up directions to get to Victory and Royal Oak - it turns out I was just north of Victory on Imperial - it was a straight run east from there to Royal Oak, where on one block there are lots of 'Whitcomb' trees in bloom, and lots of 'Accolade' with just some open flowers. Here are 'Whitcomb', still with good colour, but notice in the photo above and the second photo below how almost white the faded blossoms get. Most interesting to me is what looked like a shrub, but it's all new growth from the stump of a low-grafted 'Whitcomb'. Most of the 'Whitcomb' on this block are low-grafted.
I obscured two of the most interesting root suckers on the tree just above, noticed them when I was back there again today, so am adding those and a couple less wet blossom photos. The original stump is more clear in these photos than in the previous posting.
Victory at Royal Oak again. Joe Condie took these photos of the 'Accolade' trees on the south side of the street, which were not enough in bloom to photograph when I was there. There are about eight 'Accolade' trees on this block.
I noticed these 'Akebono' trees on Waverley Street at Victory. Joe Condie sent me photos so that I could get them on the map and hope someone photographs them when they're in bloom.
This 'Akebono' on Alpha just south of Hastings was posted with a single photo by @Nadia White Rock and by @tknd , and I was impressed enough to add it to the Ornamental Cherries thread on Appreciation: - Cherries that look like real trees | UBC Botanical Garden Forums, but really, I did not imagine such an impressive tree. Those limbs are 'Akebono' limbs - I had no idea that cultivar could produce limbs this hefty or a trunk of this size. I also had no idea this would not be in bloom yet, since I had just seen 'Akebono' trees at their peak in Kerrisdale. For the record, I did ask the moms if it was ok if their kids were in the photos I was going to post.
Thanks to Yue Yu for putting a marker on the map for a whole lot of 'Akebono' cherry trees on the Costco parking lot on Still Creek Drive. I hope someone will post a photo. I was so close yesterday, but the marker wasn't placed until today. Here's what I can see in Street View. I hope someone will post photos.
April 5, 2025 Madison Centre Park (Cherry Blossom Garden) - 'Akebono' Had already planned to be at The Amazing Brentwood and when I scrolled around Google Maps it told me there was a 'Cherry Blossom Garden' nearby! So I went to check it out :) Twice! I counted 5 rows of 'Akebono', but each row did not have the same number of trees. I estimated over 60 trees in that area. Went a bit later in the day too but it was cloudier:
