I have two magnolia trees that I found buried within some way overgrown bushes along my fence line. They are easily 20 feet tall but are very sparce with only a few branches on their lower half. I'm sure they've been suffocated by these other bushes. Way up on top they have many leaves and even bloom. I'm thinking about cutting down the bushes to free up space for these magnolias. Is there anything I can do to encourage regrowth on the lower half... or is it just a wait and see thing?
Worth a try certainly, not sure how they'd respond though. Be careful not to cut too much away in one go so as not to leave them exposed to strong winds.
