I began a worm compost this past weekend and have been doing different research on them. Today I read online - can't remember where since I went to so many sites - that having slugs in a worm compost was a good thing, and that it will help the compost move along greatly. SO, since we had a TON of slugs slithering around outside (lots of rain lately so they've been going nuts) I got a few (not sure how many) and added them to my compost. Now, after doing so, I am being told on a website that slugs are HORRIBLE in composts and I should take them out and kill them. Can someone PLEASE tell me what is correct? I have between 40-50 worms in my compost - and plan to get more soon - and thought the slugs could help them but now... I'm just greatly confused. LOL
Somebody was pulling your leg. While the slugs would be very happy in your compost box, which is really a huge salad buffet to worms and slugs, they would also lay a zillion eggs and when you spread the compost on your garden, you would be spreading slugs too. So, NO SLUGS!!! They are a cool creature, but a garden pest. And ick, that slime. It is so hard to wash off your hands! You will not need to add more worms, by the way. If your compost box is healthy, they will reproduce freely.
