Two of my copper beech trees did not leaf out fully this summer. They are large, old trees - probably 70-80 years old. I am wondering if the unusual amount of rain overflowing the nearby pond has caused root problems. This has occurred for three years now but it is the first year that the trees have not fully leafed out.

Root decay is a possibility. Look for fungal fruiting bodies around the base of the tree this autumn.

I have a young one doing the same. If it is root decay, what do you do?

    Use an appropriate fungicide.
