Hello - is there anyone in Duncan BC — a friend said there are nice blossoms next to Museum (former train station) —- i was told Dinter’s (the well known nursery south of Duncan) supplied those trees and knows what they are

    the museum doesn’t know :(

This thread is for all cherries found in the Cowichan Valley Regional District. I am not sure of the exact geographical boundaries, but this is what Wikipedia has to say:

"Communities that lie within the actual Cowichan River/Cowichan Bay watershed include Duncan, Lake Cowichan, Cowichan Bay, Cowichan Station and Maple Bay. Other nearby communities are affiliated mainly through the Cowichan Valley Regional District. Crofton and Chemainus lie within the Chemainus River Valley, while Cobble Hill, Shawnigan Lake, Mill Bay, and Ladysmith inhabit a coastal plain that includes the Cowichan and Chemainus River deltas."

These are the venerable cherries on Canada Ave north of Queens in Duncan.
Dinter Nursery says they are Akebono. Photos are from 2010.
There is one white randomly set amongst the pink.

Background in the first photo looks like 'Kanzan'. 2nd and 3rd photos are plums, Prunus cerasifera. Fourth photo is sweet cherry, Prunus avium. Are these growing on the tree in the last photo? That's 'Shirotae'. I'm wondering if the P. avium is a separate tree or rootstock growth on the 'Shirotae'.

Oh, gosh, Wendy, it was a long time ago. I might have got my photos mixed up. I didn't label them at the time. But I'll try to figure it out from the image # and fix errors in location. Should I delete the plums?

It looks fine - you didn't name any of them, so none are mis-named. And the plums could easily be the nice blossoms the person was referring to, if this is that location.

Out in the rain to get some pix of the trees on Station Street. Most likely these are the ones asked about as they are still in bloom, whereas the older ones on Canada Ave are long past blooming by now, just a few scattered petals.

Just a lonely little Shirotae in an Akebono patch. Photos from 2010, except last 2 photos from 2024.

More Kanzan, if I'm not mistaken. Photos from 2010 (first 2) and 2020 (last 2).

Kanzan on Station Street in 2010. Don't know what the white flowering tree is, though.

Kanzan on Duncan Street beside Duncan Garage building in 2018. Beautiful red flowering currant also seen here.

Sweet cherry rootstock that took over what was no doubt planted as a 'Kanzan'.
