I have a flowering dogwood that this will be the third year since planted. Last year the leaves developed a browning at the tips of the leaves and as the summer progressed, the entire leaf eventually browned out and defoliated. Right now, new growth is emerging, and it looks as though it may be happening again, but reall too soon to be sure. Can anyone help me with this problem?
78biarritz, do you have the name for this Dogwood? We had an older D. rubra here that the huge pine tree came down on. We fought fungal disease on it even after spraying and watching how this was watered. We were told to keep the inside open so that air can get in by a Master Gardener friend. We have since solved that problem by removing it due to the damage and replaced it with a disease resistant one called D. Cherokee Chief that has the variegated leaves. (I sure need more coffee.)
Im not sure of the name actuall, but is a taller narrow growing variety, gets a white flower in the spring, and produces a red fruit the size of a large cherry. If that helps!
Search for it on the web to see if that seems to be it. Many web sites talking about dogwood anthracnose will also discuss prevention and control.
thanks ron. I did check out anthracnose before and the symptoms of that seemed to be more fungal and bark related, so I didnt think that was the problem. I was at a nursery today and asked, and the responce was water related. Either too much or not enough. Not alot of help there. The leaves have comeout in the last day and seem to be ok for right now. Keep my fingers crossed.
Ron thanks for the pics. Definately not my problem though. The browning on the leaves started at the tip, and in a straight line across the width of the leaf, progressed toward the stem over the summer. No spotting or irregular browning, and no bark or stem problems either. If you think of anything else, Im all ears and very appreciative of you taking the time to respond.
78biarritz, are you over watering or using a sprinkler that shoots to high? Thanks Ron B for the corrections as I have lots to learn about them.
