The pink snow has begun. ‘Akebono’ on the way out at 1650 Bayshore Drive. https://youtube.com/shorts/mG9olg61W54?feature=share
Those trees make me so angry I refused to take people to look at them the other day. They were on their way to being tall and beautiful when they were lopped off one year.
Ichiyo at Christchurch Cathedral looking nice and pink. Schmitt cherries at Seabreeze Walk Howe St are also looking pretty with their in rolled petals.
The ‘Ukon’ at the Ring Gear Monument on Expo Blvd are in full bloom. One tree had a lot of green blossoms.
Interesting when it's just one. Yaletowner posted these 'Ukon' five days ago - seems like more than a week, when they were opening and they looked much more yellow, which is what I'm noticing around town now.
The five Shirofugen are starting to blossom and there is a branch near the lane that has has enough sun to be in full bloom. This urban park on Homer St midway between Georgia St and Dunsmuir St might be a nice shady spot on a warm day to read etc. The Amazon building opposite (old main Canada Post building) is nearing completion. Heads up that rhe VCC student bakery and cafe is just 2 blocks away (great value).
I'm glad they're still there. You were talking about plans to replace them at one point. Post a good photo when they're really open.
Now all five Shirofugen trees are blossoming nicely and should be nice on a sunny Easter Sunday morning. There are warning signs about the area being private property but it is open to the street with bike racks and seating and no one seems to mind tree viewers.
I think this Kanzan allee along Beatty Mews is safe for now. They aren't Cottonwood about to fall over on someone and looking quite nice now. The Ukon across the street are still looking fine too. Maybe still nice for all those runners and walkers attending the Sun Run Fair in a few days.
Thanks for posting these! We had a friend staying at Beatty and never thought of checking out those trees till we saw the post and were glad we did. Interesting that the grove had trees which looked more yellow like Ukon and also those which looked more green like Gyoiko. I'm wondering whether it's because we had a cold winter or that there actually are both varieties. On our walk from the friend's place, we also saw the Kanzan alley at the intersection of Nelson and Beatty. You can see the mountains but I couldn't find a good angle to capture them with the Kanzans.
Nice side-by-side comparison, Yong. I don't suppose you can post a little diagram showing which are the greener-flowered ones?
Here is an update on the four old Ukon by the historical Cambie Bridge red ring. The first photo is sort of a beauty shot of all 4 trees with the ring on a warm sunny spring day. The other 4 photos are of the blossoms of each of the four going front to back counterclockwise. To my eyes, the blossoms are from the same variety. I am surprised they are still tight on the tree with nothing yet on the ground. Looks like COV Parks has been around to trim after the windstorms.
It's interesting to see the two postings, one with flowers that look suspiciously green, and one with just one tree looking a bit more white than the others - probably opened a little earlier, so those are older flowers.
Dashing-to-a-ferry cam heading west on Georgia at Burrard it looks like a seismic blossom event on these photos — no worries, terra is still firma
This is infamous opening downhill dash for the Sun Run 10k event that happens this coming Sunday morning with over 30,000 participants enjoying these blossoms.
Yes, interesting indeed. Wonder whether it's dependent on which stage they're in, as well as temperature? There was a fallen Gyoiko branch at Stanley Park with only buds so I tried to put them in water indoors to bloom. Looks quite similar to the one at the Ring Gear monument haha.. using Yaletowner's picture: Very Green Yellow Yellow Ring Gear Monument Slightly Green
