Wow this was some great stuff... I dug about 4 clumps for my place, and 1 clump for someone else. I will get some pics tomorrow of it planted. It must be 30-40' tall, check it out!

Looks like lawn turf digging on a big scale . . .

What species of bamboo is it?

Looks like Phyllostachys bambusoides. I grow this one and it's relatively easy to root prune for containment purposes, but still needs at least a 15' to 20' run to size up.

    Cheers, LPN.

Very cool. I always wanted to go to a bamboo forest after watching a few samurai movies.

Culms look like those of P. vivax - the common "timber" bamboo of this area.

Yes they do look similar, but they are bambusoides.

Have they survived the transplanting? There doesn't seem to be a lot of root there, the clump looks very top-heavy, liable to fall over.

All but one clump survived, 100% my fault though, i got busy and didnt water enough one week, I imagine the root mass is still alive and it just aborted the shoots, so we will see what next spring brings.

What characteristics make these P. bambusoides? I'm seeing ribbed culms with persisting white powder at the nodes.

The wall thickness is way to thick for Vivax, as well, historical data, this grove flowered and died in 1972 along with the rest of the bambusoides in the world. It also shoots very late in the season.

Not to mention my friend is a bamboo expert and he said so. ;)
