Well, this is a new neighbourhood for me, and I got a treat, as I got off the 33 bus at 16th & Heather and walked towards Willow and then north towards VGH, where I volunteer. Here's what I saw: 'Akebono' both east and west from Willow on the north side of 16th, including a close-up with a clear staminode: Then, heading north, several more 'Akebono' on the east side of Willow going north from 15th: Then, still heading north, I turned westward from Willow along south side of 14th because I saw these cherry trees, but I don't know what they are, and they're not in bloom yet: And slightly further west on the same block, there were these - another mystery to me: At my destination, Vancouver General Hospital, I saw two small 'Akebono' right in front at the ramp, on 12th Ave.:
Note: This was on March 20th, and I tried to edit it to say that, but I didn't want to risk losing that whole post that took me so long.
The 'Pandora' trees are on the map, were posted several years ago at https://forums.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/threads/fairview.36483/page-6#post-354555. I called this 'Akebono' a couple of postings later, blossoms were out then.
Ah - never mind - I see what you mean. I'm still a bit confused, though. If the white ones are the 'Pandora', what are the ones that aren't open yet? Are you saying those are 'Akebono'? If so, I don't know why they wouldn't be open yet when all of the other ones in that area are.
I don't know what to tell you. The trees were 'Akebono' when I photographed them in 2017, 5th photo in the posting at https://forums.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/threads/fairview.36483/page-6#post-354586.
I've posted a couple of neighbouring trees where one is almost fully open and the other has nothing open. I just posted ones in Arbutus Ridge where one side of the street has nice partly open colour and the other side has buds that are still tight red.
Isn't this the Shiro-fugen at 805 W. 12? As per this post #185, it was in bloom at April 18, 2020. I don't think there is an 'Ichiyo' along W. 12th. Sorry, Wendy, it's not on the map.
When are you there next? A habit photo (tree shape) would be good. Also more leaves. It looks more like 'Shiro-fugen' to me, with the bronze leaves, long flower stems, and the two green phylloid pistils. I wonder if 'Ichiyo' are more open than this everywhere now.
Thanks, Anne. I was typing when your reply got posted. Since you're the one who apologized for not adding it to the map, could you add it? Thanks. It's the marker placement I particularly need. I have enough info to do the rest.
Ah - I had this little voice in the back of my head saying, "You silly - that's a 'shirofugen'" That's why I didn't label the photo properly. I do have a couple more of it, though, and I'll be back next Wednesday to see how it looks.
I've been seeing some 'Shiro-fugen' flowers opening around town, but I was not expecting to see a tree fully open this soon.
On Creekside Drive near 1st avenue, there’s a row of many small cherry trees, almost full bloom. Coppery reddish leaves, elegant flowers. Are these Shiro-fugen?
