hi, my dad has constructed a vegetable patch with what he says he bought as "garden soil", the stuff is extremely soft and water drains right from it, leaving it looking pretty dry. The veges and herbs growing in it are very slow to prout and grow, the only ones looking like theyre doing well are the potatos, everything else is SLOOOOWWWWW lol. We used the soil for seedlings as well which seem to be taking a while to mature enough to transplant, just wondering if i can get a hand on what i can do with this stuff to help push these lil buggers on a bit and get some decent growth?
Can you mulch the soil with straw to help with water retention and then at the end of the season dig it in along with manure and compost to get some good water retaining soil. http://www.global-garden.com.au/gardenbegin_veg1.htm http://users.ncable.net.au/~urbanfoodgarden/Web/Vegetables/VEGETABLE PATCH MANAGEMENT/VPM-soil.htm Liz
