This is Willard's video - she has a thing about swings and cherry trees. 20170509_CallisterPark_ShirofugenWithWendy_Willard_IMG_2708 by wcutler posted May 9, 2017 at 11:50 PM
Pandora Yeung photographed the iconic street of 'Akebono' on Graveley from Windermere to Lillooet today, has given me permission to post her photo.
UBCBG Horticulture instructor @Egan Davis led a walk for the VCBF last Sunday, April 29, starting at the Momiji Garden at the PNE and ending shortly after Callister Park, where all the 'Shiro-fugen' were at peak bloom. We could not have planned that better, except maybe for the rain. Egan is in red, with the bicycle; Linda Poole, the festival director, is in the pink raincoat, with the pink phone. Egan was going to tell us something about all the sawdust he noticed under this tree, how it probably came from this nest, when the resident flicker popped her head out to scold him. I'm sorry I missed seeing that. We found out about the party too late.
Egan pointed out lots of other trees on the walk. Most notable was this block of Dawn Redwood, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, on Cambridge at Kaslo. I carried on afterwards to visit the 'Kiku-zakura' on Turner east from Nanaimo. They are also at peak bloom now, should look pretty good for at least another week or two. The tree in the background is a 'Shiro-fugen'.
Never fails to draw a crowd. Outstanding display of 'Akebono' at Graveley and Lillooet again this year
The 'Shiro-fugen' are in bloom now in Callister Park, on Cambridge at Kaslo. If you drive, be careful about where you leave your car - I got scolded (in a nice, friendly sort of way) for pulling into a residents-only spot tonight. Look for a spot not on Cambridge.
Although it had to deal with a wound to its trunk, Fudan-zakura nonetheless has been putting out its blossoms. Now past peak bloom at March 24, 2020 on the east side of Nanaimo, south of Parker.
It was great to enjoy the famous Akebono cherry trees on Graveley which very few foot and car traffic. I looove the trunks.
The Schmitt trees along south side of E. 6th between Kaslo and Renfrew are finishing their bloom at April 10, 2020.
