Good morning to you all, I am new to the UBC Botanical Garden and I am living in Dublin in Ireland. We are getting work done on our house and I had to move my beloved cactus, which was a present from my Brother into the garden. As it has been a house-cactus for 20+ years, when I moved it outside earlier this year, it did turn red when exposed to the sun (I read that this in normal) and has now turned green again. My questions to your forum are: (1) What type of cactus do I have, (2) Can my cactus survive outside in Ireland where we have very wet, but not very cold Winters? I look forward to hearing from you.
It is not a cactus, but an Euphorbia. There are so many Euphorbia species that I don't dare to guess the species, but it resembles E. ingens. Not my kind of plants, but they are not known for their hardiness, so I would not let it stay outside in winter.
Good afternoon Mandarin, Many thanks for coming back to me so quickly and for answering my questions. My Wife will be very unhappy now that I am bringing my Euphorbia back into the house - oh well!! Thanks again
