I have a japanese maple that is just beginning to leaf out - see pics. New growth is red bark, old growth is brown, green leafed in summer. Has low growing branches so possibly more a large shrub. Do you know what kind it is?
Good morning Sabrina, I think some more photos from you after leafing out will for an help members to give an ID. Possibly think of Sango Kaku as an initial thought. Although the last photo has the appearance of Katsura when leafing out.
Much too early at this stage of development to make a guess, one in hundreds. I don't think at all it's 'Sango kaku', the wood is much too dark red. And to me, it doesn't look like 'Katsura' either... To me, at this stage, it's just Acer palm/oenum "Whatsit"... :^)
I can add it has five lobed leaves. This closest i have been able to find online to what I'm seeing is murasaki kiyohime, as the leaves are looking quite small, but perhaps that will change as spring progresses. Is it normal for it to be so slow to leaf out? I'm a bit worried about it (was installed by a landscaping company last September, although I did have an arborist come and check the depth on all installed trees afterwards and he raised the ones that needed to be raised). there are lots of leaf buds but only a few branches where the leaves are emerging, and a few dead branch tips here and there. I'm in zone 7b (Courtenay):
Hi Sabrina, I think some more photos would help members re ID. Re leafing out, as you are in zone 7 you could well be a little later in leafing out. Also, If you have had a colder than normal spring, then this will hold back leafing out. If your trees have been lifted, then they will be working on their roots which can also slow things down. But, some photos would help members.
I think Acerholic is right. When the tree is in full leaf, you'll just have to prune the dead branches, or the tips that have died. BTW, Courtenay is a town about 80 km north of where I live... ;-)
