I just purchased two 1 gallon sized Japanese maples. I plan on growing these in containers as I live in Zone 4-5b. The containers I'm considering are the wood box planter made out of cedar (I do believe). I would like to some advice from people who have done this and what I should do or shouldn't do. One is "Bloodgood" the other a "Full Moon Maple" Thanks for any help. Ladybug56
Are you planning to overwinter your maples inside in the winter? If your minimum temperature goes below 0 degrees F they will probably not be hardy in your area, and should be kept in a protected, unheated, well lit area. Your containers should be at least 24-36 inches wide x 12-16 inches deep. The potting soil should be lime free.
Thanks Hortline.......Yes the containers are in a partially heated garage. The temp has gotten down to 44 degrees so far, which will be the lowest I plan on letting it get to as I have other plants that I am also overwintering. The info on the container size was helpful. I can't wait till next Spring :)
