March 25, 2024 [W.45th & MacKenzie] Two 'Yae-beni-shidare' trees, a favourite spot on the map, are not quite ready. Many branches don't even show a sign of buds.
I did the same thing!! March 25, 2024 [Cedarhurst & Marine Dr.] 'Snow Goose' [6216 Cedarhurst] Must be nice to have this 'Akebono' in the private yard.
Wow, that tree made my morning. I've added it to (3) Appreciation: - Cherries that look like real trees | UBC Botanical Garden Forums.
They're ready. I think the fungus on this tree is not a good sign. This marking was on the boulevard outside one of these houses, am wondering what it means. Here's a nice view down Carnarvon Street south of 45th Avenue. It was previously reported in the Dunbar neighbourhood.
The 'Ukon' grove on the west side of Yew (between W. 42 and W.43) is in full bloom at April 7, 2024. It was a gusty morning, but a passerby kindly held a twig for the blossom shot, with promises of anonymity for her fingers visible in the upper left. So, not only do you have to time for bloom, rain, traffic, but now, wind and the kindness of strangers as well. I hope Wendy appreciates the imponderable conditions under which cherry scouts must work to give her good blog material!
Totally appreciated. [Imagine star emoji here]. Actually, this blog belongs to everyone who posts here. And as for the Blooming Now - Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival (vcbf.ca) page, I already yesterday used one of your 'Ukon' blossom photos as a feature at the top of the page, and I've added the group photo to the Favourites in Bloom section, AND, I changed the map link to go to your posting, since it wasn't showing the photos that it linked to originally, a feature of many of the map entries done around 2016.
The 'Shogetsu' on the west side of Yew, at the T-intersection with W. 43rd, hasn't given a peak bloom looking this good for a long time. If the evergreen behind it were a pine, instead of a Western red cedar, we would have a perfect caption. At April 18, 2024.
We're following the 'Akebono' trees in Maple Grove Park again, to come up with the peak bloom date for the International Cherry Blossom Prediction Competition. Mostly, the photos will go on the VCBF https://vcbf.ca/blooming-now/ page. I originally guessed the peak bloom date would be around March 25. Then we had that two-week freezing spell the first half of February, so it was looking like maybe April 7. Now I have no idea. The trees have gone from green buds to pedicel elongation in a week, with at least a couple more days predicted above 10C degrees, and nights close to that. Now I have no idea when they'll peak. I wasn't even sure these trees were not grafted, but if they are, they are low grafted. This tree has an 'Akebono' root sucker. Nice moss on this one. I'll be back there with @Willard on the weekend. I'm sure she'll post flower photos here. Here are two. 'Accolade' trees in this neighbourhood are not yet in full bloom.
The 'Accolade' trees along Yew Street and W. 45th are past peak bloom at March 27, 2025. Still recovering and shedding petals from yesterday's stormy weather.
Wow. @Taka and I were ten blocks away yesterday (previous two postings, before the storm) and none of the 'Accolade' we saw were open enough to yield an impressive tree photo.
There are still some ‘Accolade’ on W50th and Marine Crescent. They are mixed in with ‘Akebono’ Aging, but beautiful. .
It is only four days after @Willard posted the trees in Maple Grove Park just coming to a Puffy Pale Pink stage, and today I am concerned that I missed the day of peak bloom. They seem a little peakier than on last year's peak bloom determination (see last year's photos at Yesterday’s news – 2024 International Cherry Blossom Prediction Competition - Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival), but it was a lot sunnier for the photos this year, so the trees look more white in today's photos, and I didn't photograph them until 3pm, so they might not have been convincingly at peak bloom had I seen them yesterday, which I did not do. The blossoms all look fresh, not in any way past their best before date; there are no petals at all on the ground; and there are both a few sections of unopened buds, and some sections with all open flowers. Tree 1 (farthest north) Tree 2 (middle) Tree 3 (next to Marine Drive) Tree 4 (young tree next to Yew St, not usually photographed for the competiti0n)
April 3, 2025 W50th Ave & MacDonald to Marine Crescent - 'Akebono' & 'Accolade'? I didn't realize this street had more than one type of cultivar until I was looking at the maps just now, and I expect that I mostly missed the Accolade based on their bloom dates. I was just so in awe of how pretty everything was that I didn't take any photos up-close but I did take a video as we walked back after visiting the 'Somei-yoshino' on Marine Crescent. April 3, 2025 Marine Crescent & SW Marine Dr to W50th Ave - 'Somei-yoshino' & 'Akebono' Last year I missed peak bloom on these 'Somei-yoshino' so I'm so happy I got to see them bloomed on a sunny day :)
It looks so beautiful in that video, and so nice with no cars parked on the street, and so few driving by. Note the 'Yae-beni-shidare' appearing at the upper left at 1:52. That looks like 'Accolade' at 2:39.
