We live in Washington State and I try to plant things that need acid soil, but I now see articles in gardening magazines that indicate that some plants need lime. Is there any list or publication that will help me find which plants do need lime?
Hi Dody, Most plants prefer a neutral pH with a leaning towards acid. Then there are those that prefer alkaline. For example lilac will bloom better with a more alkaline soil See if this helps. http://msucares.com/pubs/infosheets/is0372.pdf http://homeharvest.com/plantphpreference.htm http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/horticulture/components/1731-29.html http://www.gardenguides.com/TipsandTechniques/ph.htm http://www.humeseeds.com/soilph.htm Changing pH of soil: http://www.savvygardener.com/Features/soil_ph.html Have fun! Thank you, thank you for all the information. I printed all the topics you mentioned, and I will study them as I have a mixture of soil types and plants requiring different pHs. I found from one of the articles that one of my blueberries is suffering from iron chlorosis and I thought it needed nitrogen -- the doctor is coming tomorrow to fix it!
Dody, (or should I call you Doc?) you are so very welcome!! Oh, and since you mention chlorosis. http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/focus/chlorosis.html http://plantclinic.cornell.edu/FactSheets/microchlorosis/microchlorosis.htm Newt
