Yes I know it's a bit early and the weather is turning hot... but I have maples changing colour fast in my garden, so I thought let's get this thread going. I'm hoping for a blaze of reds , oranges and yellows this year.

Many of my trees (they're potted) are showing signs of stress because of the successive heat waves and drought we've had this summer.

Last Saturday (it was already 30°C) I went to the Ilex arboretum of Meung-sur-Loire - I had my mosquito repellent with me, thank god!
Here are a few photos of Acers that are left to grow naturally among the near-hundred of box-trees varieties:

The first time I've seen a crataegifolius. From a distance, I thought it was a buergerianum :

one noteworthy tree regarding tolerance and early fall colouring. This sangu kaku continues to amaze us, especially the abuse it has taken with the heat / smoke and wind the past few months.
I took the pic first thing this morning

We had several periods of very hot and dry weather, then rainstorms, and again, it's unusually sunny for September here : today it was 25°C.

Even some of my maples that are in 90% shade have more or less suffered.

    jardin_230925a.jpg acerp-como_230925a.jpg

Among those that were in almost full sun and, 'Rainbow', 'Phoenix', and 'Arakawa' (with Acer laevigatum on the right) :

    acerp-rainbow01_230925a.jpg acerph02m01_230925a.jpg acerp-arakawa_230925a.jpg

Though I repotted it in the spring and put it in a larger pot with big pine bark on top and around, the leaves of the 'Sango kaku' turned red early.
The 'Atropurpureum dissectum' of some sort managed well until a few days ago :

    acerp_sangok02_230925a.jpg acerp_atro-dis02_230925a.jpg

'Beni hagoromo' was about to lose its leaves, so I put it in 90% shade in July, and it's faring not so bad :

    acerp-benihag02_230925a.jpg

Now for the worst : 'Tsuma gaki'. I already lost one, it's one of my favourite but it seems I just can't keep it healthy, no matter what :

    acerp-tsuma-gaki_230925a.jpg

One of the healthiest in my "livestock", a seedling from 'Ryusen' :

    acerp-ryusen-sem20-nr04_230925a.jpg

... I remember putting the heating on in the evening in mid-September 20 years ago.
Now, I open the windows, so the rooms get some fresh air when the sun goes down (10° - 25°+)...

@AlainK both of our TG’s seem to have spots and holes on their leaves..mines growing and pushing out more leaves but looks a bit ropey by August..

Funny enough my Beni Hagoromo (1.5m) was struggling so I also moved it to a shaded position pre summer.. with only an hour or two morning sun..looking much happier..will take another year or two for the leaves to become densely populated again

Aureum has already curled up for the season here, helped along by an atmospheric river.

A few days ago was still some developing color, no need to show the brownout this year.

There's this one that was from a tray of "various seeds". At first, I thought it was a cross from a shirasawanum, but now I'm pretty sure it's a pseudosieboldianum.

In the last heat wave, it lost most of its leaves, those remaining were badly scorched.

I thought it would wait until next spring, but we had several days of rain last week. And today I noticed that it's pushing out new leaves, and even flowers !
It's usually a bad sign of over-stress (le chant du cygne ?...), and I was afraid it would use all its reserves.
So I slip-potted it (the roots were not so tight), 5 cm at the bottom, 2.5 cm around and added a little slow-release fertilizer.
    Fingers crossed...

Few different cultivars from this week , colours are changing very quickly now with all the potted/containerised trees , where as the ground guys still think they are in late Summer mode :)
Following pictures are of Acontifolium , Omureyama , and finally O'isami from today with the only bit of sun we have had all week in Yorkshire !!
