'Atropurpureum dissectum' seedlings, now 3+ years old :
'Arakawa', and on the left Acer laevigatum, a semi-evergreen :
Very strange Autumn so far, with some turning, some just turning brown and dropping and some only just changing.
So here are a few more from my garden with muted colours that have just turned.
Phoenix x 2
Nice Derek..it has been weird..my Westonbirt spreading star went red in September and dropped completely 2 weeks ago..yours looked like it had several weeks to go the other day from your photo
Red Pygmy..looking rather orange
I'm having the same thing with many this year R. It might be the very wet Summer, but who knows !! I still have quite a few that are green with no sign of change. We have a frost forecast tomorrow night into Saturday, so I will post some of those to show how they are looking.
Same thing here, very muted colors, certain normally reliable trees (like Chitose yama or O sakazuki) just kind of going brown, then falling off. A lot of dirty yellows where there are normally stronger reds or oranges. I've put it down to wind and rain, mostly; the protected trees in pots, int the courtyard, seem to be doing a little bit better than trees in the ground. We've already had 67 mm of rain this month [!] and pretty consistant blowy weather.
Frost already, Derek! Too early for my taste. It has been getting down to 5-ish, I finally broke down and turned on the heat, plus the stove going every night.
Here are pictures I took on the 6th of November. The unlabeled bush is the nice Cotoneaster franchetii, really a great 4-season plant. I've always got lots of littles if anyone wants one.
Tbh Emery, if it means bright days without this constant rain, it will be very welcome.
Loving yours and everyone else's photos.
More rain and dark skies this morning, but made for some nice colours.
Dr Brown x 2
Skeeters Broom (trying to be Twombleys Red Sentinal)
A small part of my garden with various maples. Osakazuki at the rear middle for @Mapled
Really enjoy seeing the garden picture, Derek, very beautiful.
Amazing color you had this year on Shgitatsu sawa! Always a difficult maple to grow (but I think worth it) mine didn't even go yellow/orange this year. The leaves just drop and flew away. They say it's easier in a pot, but I've put it in a very sheltered spot instead.
Here are a couple of pics I missed from the 7th, then pictures from yesterday 9/11, where there were flashes of sun between the wind and rain.
I also took some wider shots, all looking disheveled (not to mention unkempt! ha) but still very pretty But notice some of those yellows: even the Shaggy Barked maple, or Koto no ito, which are usually strong reds and oranges.. The wide-angled shot of the western entrance to the aceretum does show those good oranges from the species palmatums, bless them. And the seedlings from Shinjuku are again showing some of the best color of all the JMs.
Still a few roses and random summer flowers around, but announcing down to 3 tomorrow morning, before warming up a little again. I don't think it will freeze, but it will be interesting to see if the minimums read lower than before here. The weather service, along with the park and the Uni at Caen are using our station as a base for a study on climate in the park, they've beefed it up a little bit and moved the main sensor pod to a mast in th middle of a field, where it does frost more readily.
Super colours @emery @Acerholic @AlainK and others :)
Here’s : Attaryi - some leave scorch on tips..but hey!
Skeeters broom - love the shape of yours @Acerholic
Small Shishigashira x2
And finally - Ginkgo biloba ‘troll’
We have never had a japanese maple turn to fall colours this late, Shishigashira is giving us a nice show.
Also a few leaves to rake up in the days ahead
Storm Debi next, so before all the leaves blow away for another year, here are a few more from this morning.
Ruslyn in the pink
Had a little sunshine this morning, but some strong winds, so just one photo today.
An early evening photo of my Autumn Gold. Always the last to turn, but not this year, as I have others that are still green.
Beautiful, Derek !
2-3-4 year-old seedlings, 11 XI 2023:
(the last one is from a batch of seeds from 'Seiryu' sown in December 2022)
11 November 2023 :
'Phoenix', 'Atropurpureum', 'Deshojo' and Acer takesimense at the top, Acer discolor :
Yes indeed, that is a lovely amoenum. I don't know it, is it a recent introduction I wonder? The same cultivar in the previous post? Your katsura specimen is gorgeous too, I don't really think of it as having much autumn color. It freezes too easily for me to grow with much success.
@AlainK those are looking nice! Seiryu does sometimes throw some pretty delicate offspring. A. takesimense has been rather odd this year, curled leaves and very dark green. On deck to be planted. Funny how your "discolor hybrids" (which we now have good reason to think are buergerianum × oblongum) are so much more colorful there than here.
It got pretty blowy here again today, not much sun, but I had some pics from the 11-12, and took a few between squalls today. Already over 94 mm of rain this month and not even at the halfway point!
The one labeled "A saccharinum" is an obvious error, it's a sugar maple, A. saccharum. SF1001G has very small leaves that come out dark purple in spring, making a very fine contrast with the green bark. Hard to show in a picture. I was going to name it, but not sure it's not sick now, sadly, there is some dieback. Very slow growing upright.
Interesting how quickly the maples are changing this year, Emerald Lace isn't terribly interesting in the picture below, but was a bright orange today. Hard to keep up.
Orange Dream was photographed just at dusk,
Same here :
My Linearilobum is having an orange yeah, don't think it's done that for around 10.
Pictures from 11/11/23 , one thing that's surprised me this fall is how most of my trees have a distinctive yellow/orange hue to them all , very strange ?? Just a few more to go now, trees which should have lasted another week or so had to contend with storm "Debi" yesterday and she came out on top. they didn't fair to well !!! :) :) Hey Ho always next year to look forward to i suppose.
Amazing colours everyone!
@AlainK your Koto-no-ito is looking superb
@ROEBUK orange all round!
