Mine looks horrible. Maybe they named it that way because it lasts as long as a ripe persimmon stays, erm, nice.

In previous years, it kept its red colour longer than Trompenburg, but this year I put it in full shade, that's probably why.
I bought it as 'starfish'. Perhaps they didn't have enough letters to write the full name... :-)

Because of the heat wave in late June-early July, many are beginning to take autumn colours. But there has been a lot of rain and the temperatures are lower so some of them are pushing new leaves, especially, but not only, those that have had burned leaves.
I sprayed my 'Tsuma Gaki' with fungicide in spring, it has fewer brown spots - so far !

... and this one, from seed, that I labelled Acer oliverianum, but I doubt it is :

Sorry I can’t help with identification, but interested to hear how your JM collection is doing this year :)

Hey Mark, I think it's probably a sycamore. There's lots of variation. The leaf lobes look like A. opalus, but that seems pretty unlikely in your parts! Cheers, -E

Thanks Emery thought it would be down the sycamore route just by the size of the leaf , but as to which one i have no idea , we do have a quite a few old large sycamores on our avenue so obviously some kindly bird or a nice gust of wind decided to place a seed in my garden !! Letting it grow though curious to see it develop , can't believe i never noticed it :)

Hy dicky5ash , Trees are doing great this year especially the ground growers , seeing lots of colour right now at this early stage , the hot sunny days certainly have had an effect on all of my trees for sure , don't tend to post much these days with being my Mothers primary carer she's 93 now and requires quite a lot of my attention 24/7 which i do gladly !!! so my trees naturally have to come in 2nd place , will be posting a few come the fall though , not disappearing just yet :):)

hey good to hear from you Mark.. At least it’s the kind of hobby that is pretty accommodating and can continue when you have a spare moment.. even if those moments are brief and fewer than ideal. Take it easy - looking forward to those Autumn pics

"Maples in summer" are also the ones we can see around : I took a walk by the river this morning (tto hot in the afternoon, 34-38° for several days) and I took photos of an Acer buergerianum I had spotted before. The leaves are a bit different from the one in my garden :

    20250814_094919-b.jpg 20250814_094944-b.jpg

Mine has more pointed lobes :

    20250814_181654-b.jpg

... and this one I bought as "Acer discolor" but it's probably not. Some of the leaves have very small side lobes (see bottom right).

    20250814_181751-b.jpg

I will definitely take samaras from the one by the Loire banks this autumn...

It's still summer, but at last rain came after weeks of suffocating heat. Some have suffered, but it's not that bad...

The weather continues to be disastrously dry, judging from the rates of defoliation there is going to be a lot of losses in the arboretum. I really fear for some of the mature Cornus, and certain maples maples that are situated in dry spots (already). Many of the JMs, even dissectums, are resisting quite well; whereas I noticed yesterday that a 20 yr old Hikasa-yama is half covered with brown leaves. So time spent watering, working on cultivars, and now cutting grass, not taking pictures, but here are a few random grafts over the last month or so. I did take some pics of 2 yr olds yesterday, will post those next.

'Prof. Tadeusz Szczesny' is an old platanoides from Poland which we are trying to reintroduce: it is a lovely cream leafing out in spring, which lasts for some time. 'Gotemba-nishiki' is meant to be A capillipes, I am not sure. The tray is full of understock for this winter. On the lawn is the first triage of plants that go in the ground this winter, though I will probably plant Bi-hō, shown in autumn robe in the next figure. Samantha is hanging out in front of plants that have been worked on this year, repotted, root pruned, etc. The unmarked variegated sycamore is Souffrettes, while the last two show the graft from this past winter. Not really time yet to pull the tape off, but I wanted to see one of them, and this seemed like the best bet. The unlabeled platanoides is 'Walderseei', but I think it came from a duff scion; really unfortunate as it was the only one that took; I did grafting much too late, with predictable results. Hopefully I'll be able to get some more scions this winter, and start earlier. -E

P.S. 'Hana-chiru-sato' appears identical to 'Wakō-nishiki', as one might expect given the stories of its origin. But the young plant pictured is much healthier than Wakō-nishiki here, and is putting on this gorgeous yellow second flush. (Wakō looks healthy enough this year, but is just sitting there. I think my plant has poor understock; I'll probably try and graft it this winter, though it is clearly going to be a tough one to do.)

Hi Alain - you seem to have done remarkably well
what with the oven temperature weather you’ve endured. I know you said you had a few that looked poorly and may have been missed by your sons when you were on holiday.. my mums instructions were to put the soaker pipe watering system on for 2 hours every 3days when I was away for 3 weeks (during the intense mid June hot spell) I can see from my water meter bill that they got a bumper 3000 ltr dose on two occasions- I think mum and dad must have had an afternoon nap at my house on those occasions!!!!

Hey Emery - looking great despite your weather challenges- hope your HY makes it through.. my 3.5m Skeeters Broom decided to totally defoliate - during my own pot watering routine under my own stewardship - when everything else was totally fine- very odd!

Out of curiosity how old are those seedlings in the tray?

Out of curiosity how old are those seedlings in the tray?[/QUOTE]

They germinated in '23, so this is their 3rd year. Pros grow understock in 1 to 2 years, but they must boost the hell out of it. Which can't make it easier to graft on. I actually don't mind a thinner caliper for thin scions.

There are a few pretty seedlings in that pic, Rich!

Here are a few of mine, mostly also seedlings from '23. Not many labels, mostly palmatum complex, the ones after the sieboldianum are actually pycnanthum and negundo ssp mexicanum (from the seed distribution) this year. The two floridanums are from the same collection; I tried using Dick van der Maat's preferred fertilizer with early repots (DCM #5), and it didn't work very well for me. Outside of the greenhouse, perhaps, or with my soil-less substrate. The first one received no additional fertilizer, was somewhat chlorotic and as you see is experiencing a lot of stress. The second one was also very chlorotic, along with it's identical mate in a 3 l airpot. (The stressed maple shown is in a nursery pot.) I gave this one a shot of performance organics last month, it greened up and had an excellent second flush. I didn't give additional fertilizer to the other, and although green it is still chlorotic and had had no late summer growth at all. -E

Looking good Emery - mine are 2023 seedlings and they are half the size, if not smaller, I have only given them 2 doses of weak seaweed per annum, but they look ok..slowly but surely - I’d be gutted if I gave them too much fert and killed them!

Where do you store the small ones in winter?

A few pics taken this morning.
I must repot, change the soil, and trim the Autumn Moon next spring.
The Tsuma gaki doesn't look that bad this year.

That Tsuma-gaki looks incredible, Alain. Mine looks like a couple of dry sticks, with the odd haggard leaf.

It's a pretty plant, but I don't quite get what's special about 'Arjos1' (METAMORPHOSA) . Is it really that distinct from 'Butterfly', or some of the other Marginatum Group maples?

That Moonrise is looking great too, what a good plant. I was just hearing this week about what an amazing grower Carl Munn is (I think the cultivar is called 'Munn01'). Mine has resisted the heat and drought reasonably well, but there are still some brown leaves. I haven't watered it at all.

Rich, I keep plants 2 year plants, and understock, in an unheated (and open) stable. Along with most everything that's in pots, that can go through a real freeze. The big pots are on concrete flooring, so they get a little colder, the smaller plants are on tables. Seedlings in their first winter I keep in the unheated polytunnel.

    Cheers, -E

Thanks for the info re seedling storage over Winter

Re Metamorphosa/Arjos1 - There’s not a hugely significant difference but it is an unusual pale greeen and the leaf texture is very different- it has a super matt finish, no mid sheen or glossiness at all. I’d say it’s different enough to warrant adding to a collection, unlike the many red and very similar dissectums that are available.
