Great photos! I’m trying to train another Garnet into a taller form, will see how that pans out! I’ve not come across that Berberis, great colour!
Before the thunder storms starts in a few minutes, I took these to share. Not posted these yet this year. Rainbow x 2 ( showing some pretty variegation) Peve Starfish x2 Ruslyn in the pink x2 Higasayama x2 ( small and with a little variegation) Reticulatum x2 Geisha x 2
Morning sun shedding light onto the Kasagiyama. This is one of oldest trees in the garden, well over 50 now. A close up of the beautiful leaf colour and formation as well. We grafted many cultivators from this tree over the years And here is one of the Container grown Seiryu trees that has now been in the garden for a few years. It was in a container for almost 40 years before we decided to move it into the garden. Dog pen to the left of the tree
What a storm we had here in Southern England last night. Thunder, lightning and very heavy rain. But after checking my trees all is OK. So here are few more of my maples not posted yet. Satsuki beni x 2 Zaaling x 2 Beni Tsukasa x2 Koto ito komachi Shishigashira x2 Peve Ollie x2
As we approach the May bank holiday here in the UK, all my maples but a few have now leafed out. I will show those in a couple of days. But here are some more from this morning. Mure hibari x2 Sherwood elfin x2 (still small but strong) Omure yama x2 Orion x2 Beni shigitatsu sawa x2 Ornatum ( damaged by fat pigeons on one side so half a tree)
Funny how life works out. 13 years ago we added an addition to our family business and the contractor planted these 2 trees in the parking lot islands. At the time I knew nothing about maples. Obviously a lot has changed for me. I started to notice how pretty the trees bark and leaves were a couple years ago. To my surprise friend of mine who is in the tree business told me they were Acer Griseum. How cool is that. Random landscape trees in a parking lot. Conditions: full sun, reflected heat from parking lot, urban pollution, never watered or fertilized.
There could be Acer griseum seedlings under them or around the bushes by the white fence . It looks like the perfect place for them to germinate…
Hey, Does anyone have pictures of Dark Knight and/or a mature Purple Ghost? I'm hesitating as to which one to get between the two of them. Thanks!
Hi Julie, IMHO Purple Ghost and Dark Knight have very little differences and with out a label most would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Have a look at #174 on https://forums.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/threads/acer-palmatum-purple-ghost.4344/ This is a close up of the leaf on my old purple Ghost. I don’t have it anymore, as I gave it to a friend. I do have a new small one though as I couldn't be without this cultivar. So IMO it's a 50/50 choice. I don't have Dark Knight btw, just seen photos to compare.
Thanks. I did read the Purple Ghost thread, but ended up with mixed feelings since half of the owners seemed to end up disappointed about its colours and reliability^^. I've never seen it myself. I might try to get a small one and see how it fares in my garden. I was wondering if Dark Knight kept its colour during the summer, but it's fairly new, so I'm not sure many people have it.
The sun is shining and my maples are lapping it up... and it looks like everything except 1 has made it through the past 8 months of constant rain. So here are some more from my garden this morning. Acer griseum x 3 Wills devine x2 Sunset x 2 Jeddeloh Orange x 2 Autumn gold x 2 Brilliantissimum x2 ( very late this year) Esk Sunset x2 ( also ver late) Fireglow x 2 ( a replacement)
Shigitatsu sawa Azuma murasaki Hino tori nishiki and Phoenix Alpine Sunrise in front of Garnet Sode no uchi, hopefully gives an idea of the leaf size
Haven't had much time in the garden these last few days, and wow does this thread move quickly! Here are few as they come out, or advance more into full spring form. The unlabeled pic is the finalized red dissectum bed at the side entrance to the Aceretum, which surround a more vertical Deshôjô. After that pic I tried to take some Hoshi yadori pics from below, the trouble with the larger size, is the variegation is very difficult to see high in the tree, from underneath the leaves. The light has to be just right. Also, some new Acer Buddies, deciduous Azaleas planted in a bed of 10. First time flowering, they were supposed to be yellow... I'm not a big fan of orange Azaleas!! Oh well. -E
I was wondering why my Peve Ollie was so red when yours was so green but also it looks like it maybe got damaged by frost. At least I hope it is not under attack by insects or disease. The leaves look very similar and mine is in morning sun coming from the west for about half the day. Anyway it is interesting to see someone else's Peve Ollie as you don't hear about it much here.
Ooh, that's bad. I escaped the floodings (I live above 50 meters or so from the river Loire) and the hail : this I couldn't avoid, but so far, so good. 80% of the Chablis vineyards were destroyed by hailstones at least the size of a golf ball... :-( And I'm afraid my maples will begin to be toasted in a couple of weeks...
Hi C. Unfortunately mine is not getting enough sunlight, but I have moved it and hopefully it will colour up soon. Yours is a wonderful red btw.
Autumn Moon with beautiful patterns on the leaves: My Sangokaku developed a nasty case of pseudonomae at the base of one its main branches, I'm going to have to cut it off. I didn't even make any cut down there :(
The "Marjan" from the original group of 4 we received from Dick Van der Maat in the lat 90's. Really coming into its own now after 20 plus years. Always been in the container Atrolineare this year has opened up with a unique red / orange tone that varies slightly from leaf to leaf. Nice contrast from the deep reds of the red dragon
Hana Matoi basking in the sun and looking so pink in the light Ukigumo with its pretty pink flushes: Beni Chidori is starting to turn green inside: Summer Gold and the shirasawanum club:
Hi, it's sagina subulata 'Lime moss'. Strangely enough, it takes more sun than the regular green one for me. And it's sooo pretty.
