A few more from my garden, before the storm that is coming tomorrow with 58mph winds doing the new shoots no good at all. Urghh!!! Beni hime Aconitifolium Otome Zakura Fenna Atropurpureum Red Wine Red Flamingo
Some more pics over the last few days, in spite of the bad weather. We avoided any freezing, (so far), anyway! But very blowy indeed out there for the moment. These are Acer pycnanthum, a strikingly beautiful maple in flower, much more elegant somehow than its N. American counterpart. But very difficult to get a good photo, really showing the cloud of red. Above featuring the lovely (and very rare) A. maximowiczii, formerly known as A. pectinatum ssp. maximowiczii. Ours is very small still, so hopefully this year it will really get its feet under it. A new (to me) rubrum which is supposed to have red tones all summer. A pentaphyllum, leafing out 2 full months earlier than ever seen. They're all inside, this is the only one with growth. Hopefully doesn't mean it's kaput! A. tsinglingense, inside temporarily to get out of the wind. I showed a picture of a red Acer × pauciflorum, here are 3 more seedlings, showing the great variety that I've had, from the normal, left, to the really bizarre, center. That one even has some unlobed leaves, and the lateral lobes are always very tiny. I can't imagine what it crossed with, to look like that. Maybe a straight mutation? Brandt's Dwarf is new to me, is it supposed to look like this? Doesn't look much like a WB somehow. Then the pretty young leaves of this pictum variety, and A. metcalfii, of unknown hybrid status. -E
That looks very much like it should Emery. The similarities with Shaina are soooo close IMO. Hope all yours are coping in this wind? Nelson, I believe is the name of this storm.
Right, Nelson indeed. I think you have it worse up there than we do, the maximum gust has only been around 65 kph, watching the BBC news last night, they seemed to be expecting it far worse! Not a great time for it, with all the tender stems. Interesting, I didn't know it was much like Shaina, I hope easier to grow! Cheers, -E
Shin-deshojoo with Japonicum Attaryi behind, the intensity of the former in the Spring is unreal..I remember seeing it at Westonbirt
The red ones : 'Beni maiko', 'Deshojo' and 'Beni hagoromo' which already shows "reverted" leaves : Flowers on 'Arakawa', 'O-sakazuki', 'Koto no Ito', and 'Trompenburg' (Acer laevigatum on the right) : 'Como', 'Momoiro koya-san', 'Orange Dream', 'Tama hime', and 'Jerre Schwartz' :
The sun is here Hurrah!! And so some more of my maples leafing out. Ueno yama Sister Ghost Pixie Ryusen Murasaki kiyohime Karusagawa
the Bonfire, just starting to push out its beautiful yellow / pink foliage that will last for a couple of weeks, orange dream transplanted into the garden after many years in the container and always a cutie, the shishigashira as it opens up
Shishigashira and Katsura Orange Dream and one I received with the wrong tag, but probably Azuma murasaki, note the white hair/fuzz: A couple of volunteers from seed, one likely related to Trompenburg Hino tori nishiki and the real Trompenburg
Lots of maples coming out, though we need a warm day or two to really open the leaves. But I couldn't resist taking a bunch of pics over the last few days.
And a few more to finish with. Mapi-no-machi hime is often known as Little Princess. I always think A. divergens is one of the prettiest maples, but most people seem to find it drab. Interesting to see both male and female flowers, this is the first time flowering. And, like most of the male A. negundo clones, 'Auratum' is spectacular in Spring. I don't generally recommend 'Carnival', but this is it's prettiest time. If you don't concentrate on the reverted parts. And before it burns. 'Silver Celebration', a similar campestre (and offspring of Carnival) is better in most situations, doesn't burn or revert either.
The "red nails" of 'Tsuma gaki' are beginning to show : Left to right, 'Bihoo', 'Redwine', 'Katsura', etc. : 'Trompenburg' and 'Atrolineare' : Not a maple, Pleione :
Sister Ghost Amagi Shigure Amber Ghost unfurling Beni Tsukasa Shirasawanum Aureum, coming soon Summer Gold Sazanami
This is an exceptionally beautiful old cultivar, from 1732. It used to be very rare, I don't know if that is still the case, but I would certainly like to grow it., I suppose the yellow to brown autumn color is less spectacular than some, but it clearly makes up for it in all other aspects. Thanks for posting, beautiful picture. -E
Bit of a Spring time only show off type of cultivar i have found over the years. Lovely coloured leaf pattern then into a muted Summer tone , then as you say a bit yellowy brown in the fall. Had mine since 2010 started off in a container then spent a few years in the ground (which it didn't like) but grew very well with a nice root ball when it was then lifted and re potted into a 60ltr pot and shows well every year now, does like the sun though and is re situated for this year. Few pics from the past few years.
Tiny green spiders on the unfurling leaves of '(Peve) Starfish'. A lot of people don't, but I love them : 'Emerald Lace' : 'Flavescens' : Ha ! looks good this year at last ! Can't help taking more photos of 'Como' : 'Ruysen'. The mother plant, and a seedling that doesn't have the same lime gfreen colours - so far ? 'Summer Gold' :
'Deshojo' ('Jerre Schwartz' and Acer takesimense as a backdrop) : The Malus 'Evereste' is another nice backdrop for 'Phoenix' : The 'Orange Dream' bonsaï has very pale coloursI took a photo wirh leaves of (what I think is, but not sure) a form of Acer circinatum. I put the "mother plant" in a place where it will get a few hours of sun in late afternoon : Acer shirasawanum 'Autumn Moon' : 'Tsuma gaki' : no, it's not windy, it's just the way the leaves are unfolding : 'Butterfly' at my place, and one that looks a bit like it in a park :
This was purchased with various name tags on the tree and pot as Flavescens, does it look right..looks quite different to yours @AlainK edit I was looking at the wrong photo on your post Alain lol
