Does anyone know why some Mystic Mikawa’s leaf out bright orange, while others are more pink and cream. Mine looks more like Mayday at the moment than Mystic Mikawa.. I mean could be temp, soil conditions, lineage. But I was wondering if someone knows how to bring out that orange.
I don't have Mystic yet, but I do have a lot of spring color maples. My experience with most of these and spring color comes down to the amount of light. Generally more sunlight brings out more color, although there may be some types that show a more favorable color in shade. If yours is in a pot, try giving it more sunlight if possible. Mine get full sun here in Wyoming (which is quite harsh!) during the spring. When we start getting into the heat of summer I move the more delicate trees under 40% shade. Nutrients in the soil may be another factor. I'll be interested in hearing about others' experience specifically with Mystic. It's neat looking tree!
Mine is in full sun, mind you it’s Oregon and sun is scarce here during the winter spring transition. We are just getting into better weather and the sun is becoming more prevalent. My Mystic is 7-8 years old so it’s not the typical 1 gallon stick people buy online. But for some reason leaf out and budding started much earlier this year. So the first portion came out on cloudier days. We shall see if it starts to orange up. I have another smaller Mystic that is about to leaf out. So we shall see what happens with the smaller Mystic.
I'm here in Eugene. Do you know a good place to find larger size Mystic Mikawas in Oregon? I have 2 from Lucile at Whiteman Farms but they are small.
