Appreciate information on the toxicity of Nandina domestica. Are the berries toxic to birds? Also has anyone in the Vancouver area had issues with the plants spreading by runners? My understanding was that this plant did not have bamboo spreading issues. Thanks in advance!

The page at Are nandina berries poisonous? says
The page at Nandina Not Bamboo says
It does on to say that it may be the seeds that contain the hydrocyanic acid, and it quotes another well-known source that claims to make jam from the berries.

Though the common name is Heavenly Bamboo, it is not related to bamboo and does not spread by runners.

Cooking to make jam will detoxify the cyanide.

Thank you all for the responses to my Nandina questions.! I have also read that the berries are poisonous to small pets does anyone have any info on that? I can't imagine many cats or dogs eating the berries, but would like gather as much knowledge on this topic as possible. Cheers.:)
