New Westminster

I just couldn't resist taking a few photos of the beautiful array of cherries in front of the main entrance to Douglas College (my employer) in New Westminster (on 8th Street, just south of Royal Ave.).

There are these unidentified, but either Somei-Yoshino or just plain Prunus Avium trees:



And then there's this emerging Kanzan (?):



And this stunning Shirotae, I think:

First posting 2010

Today at Douglas College in New Westminster (Royal Ave. & 8th St.), I found this single Autumnalis Rosea in bloom:



Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me, so they were captured with my cell phone.

UUUUUGH the vancouver area is sooo niceeee! I wish I were there.

 

These photos were taken at the New Westminster 22nd Street skytrain station. According to my information from Wendy Cutler they are Whitcombs. My apologies for being so slow to post this. These were taken a week and a half ago.

 

From two blocks away, you can see these 'Rancho' lining both sides of 6th Ave for a block at 5th St. I hate to say they looked more exciting from a distance, as they look fine close-up, even though they're a bit past prime, but when I first saw them I thought they were the best-looking 'Rancho' display I'd ever seen. Well, they may be the best 'Rancho' display in New West.

 

The very early Autumnalis Rosea that I posted last year at this time, in front of the main entrance to Douglas College on 8th Avenue, is in bloom again. Here are some (cell phone) pictures (but my cell phone is better this year):

Season for this cultivar is November to March, flowers may open any time during that period.

 

I think these are 'Accolade' but not sure. Blooming on 15th Street and London in New West.

 

It has been noted before that there is a planting of a variety of cherries in front of the New Westminster campus of Douglas College, on 8th Street just south of Royal Avenue. When I took these pictures on April 12th, the Autumnalis Rosea previously posted only had one or two blossoms left, and this Shirotae was in full bloom:

 

It's my fault we were late getting to the end of the first leg of a three-part walk today, this one from the Scott Road Skytrain Station to Production Way Station in Burnaby. After the Patullo bridge, we were supposed to walk along Columbia, but I saw this row of 'Ukon' on Hastings above Wellington (with one 'Kanzan' - Justice's Rule of Incongruity), so the four of us went to see them. They show on the gmap, with the one 'Kanzan' even standing out.


Then we just carried on in that direction, so up Coburg to Royal Ave, then up Vancouver St (seems to also be Granville St - I have a blurry photo of the street sign of the intersection of Royal and Granville) along Queen's Park. In addition to several 'Kanzan' just starting to bloom was this nice 'Shirotae', still fragrant.


And two or three of these trees, long past peak bloom. 'Washi-no-o'? I didn't notice any fragrance. Larger blossoms than 'Akebono' and jagged petal edges, large stigma, short peduncles. The third photo is a zoom-in on the second one.

 

Odds and ends in New West - we were seriously late on that walk and I didn't get much chance to compose photos.

Here's a group of 'Ukon' at what I think is the southeast corner of 6th Ave and McBride. Several 'Kanzan' are interspersed. After that block is a pair of 'Amanogawa' on 6th at Glenbrook.


This is a private tree whose structure looks like our 'Sendai-shidare'. I didn't get to go up close to investigate.


On what I think is private property but at the edge of what I think is the Central Valley Greenway are these two 'Amanogawa', looking like they'd like to be forest trees.


[Edited]I forgot to mention seeing on the gmap (until they update the photo) a lot of what look like 'Kanzan' planted in the Fraser Cemetary, at Richmond north of Cumberland. I'm basing that assumption on the fact that other gmap photos in the area were taken when 'Ukon' and 'Kanzan' were in bloom.

 

Here's another one of the same mystery tree I posted on the Kensington-Cedar Cottage thread. This one is in front of the main entrance to Douglas College on 8th Avenue just south of Royal Ave.:

It's 'Shirofugen'. Wait a few weeks - they'll be mostly pink flowers.

 

Re: Burnaby

The 22nd St Station is New West?! No wonder I couldn't find the photos. I thought it was Burnaby. Apologies to Erika, who posted photos last year, and to Megami if you went out of your way to get your photos. I've copied this part from my posting in the Burnaby thread - I think the rest of the posting was really Burnaby.

I decided to ride the rails this afternoon and get the photo I've been begging for, of the 'Whitcomb' trees at the 22nd St Skytrain Station. My so-called friends have been mentioning them for a couple of years now, and they're on the map, but no photos have been posted. So here they are. The first photo is from inside the train, just included to give an idea of the setting. There are two trees together and one other, just to the west of the south side of the station. [Edited by wcutler 2012mar24] I just found out that the 22nd St Station is New West - no wonder I haven't been able to find the photos. My friend did post them there!] I'm leaving these in this posting, will copy them to New West.

 

Here are some photos of the 'Whitcomb' blooming at the 22nd street Skytrain station, sorry for the low quality photos, the only camera I had with me was my iPhone.

PS - the 'Accolade' on 15th Street and London (New Westminster) are just starting to bloom, not worth taking a photo yet though, just a handful of blossoms near the top of the tree.

 

On April 10th, the beautiful 'Shirotae' in front of the main entrance to Douglas College, on 8th St. & Moody in New Westminster was in full bloom:

This same tree is looking quite magnificent for an Autumnalis Rosea:

 

22nd St Station. Similar to last year at about/exactly this time, the Whitcomb have bloomed. They look great while waiting for a 410.

 

These Kanzan in front of Douglas College (right beside the autumnalis rosea location) are nearing (or at) full bloom already. It looks like some of the earliest Kanzan in the Metro to be this far into the process.

 

22nd St Station Whitcombs are blooming and starting to look real nice. Too bad it's been raining a lot so they're getting absolutely soaked in rain and snow.

I'll be updating this constantly as I now pass through 22nd St on a daily basis (Burnaby -> Richmond). Can't wait for how beautiful they'll be in a few weeks!

 

Gosh, they always look great in ~full bloom, these cherries. You can see them coming up on the Queensborough Bridge. It's an absolute pleasure to pass by on a daily basis :)

The Kanzans in front of Douglas College, at 8th St. & Agnes St., are blooming on different schedules, apparently. While the bottom one is in full bloom, the upper two are lagging a bit behind.

Meanwhile, the Shirotae is finished, the Prunus Avium is in full bloom, and the Shirofugen (not shown in the pictures) is just beginning to open a bit.
