The three 'Shirofugen's in front of Douglas College on 8th Street are now in bloom. The one on the bottom, near the intersection with Angus, and the one on the top, at Royal Ave., look lovely, whereas the one in the middle is a bit scrawny.
Saving 3 or 4 Sakura tree's Hello I recently discovered that the city of New Westminster is building a new bus bay and expanding the road on 8th ave. they wish to remove 3-4 cherry blossoms and I do not want this to happen. I have created a blog and now attempting to gain support for saving them. http://savethesakuras.wordpress.com/2014/09/24/dont-trade-trees-for-traffic/
Re: Saving 3 or 4 Sakura tree's Thanks for posting this, Nabob. I've moved your posting into this New Westminster thread. Is this outside Douglas College? Do you see some postings below of the trees under attack? If so, could you reply and list the posting numbers so we can see what they look like? Or maybe you have photos to post? Thanks.
The trees are on 8th ave and 8th st. further uptown by the high school Nwss specifically it is the building 777 whose fence they line. I can take some photo's but of course they are not in bloom right now. There are about 10 of them in a row. I will search for photos on here now. Thank you. Edit/Update I did not see pictures of the trees here also have been informed that there is two weeks left before they begin removal.
Has anyone got pics of the 22nd St Station whitcombs yet? I'm really missing those since I'm not in Metro Van this year :') they're probably some of Metro Van's most accessible whitcomb cherries at this point.
Yes, I took some on Valentine's Day, they aren't great shots though, just from my iPhone. It was rainy and overcast but the blossoms were still beautiful!
Actually, they are great shots, and they demonstrate how dedicated our Cherry Scouts are, not letting a little inclement weather prevent us from enjoying this ephemeral springtime beauty. xd1771, thanks for coaxing Megami into posting these (!), and we'll miss you this year.
Here is one 'Shirofugen' on the corner of 4th Avenue and Stewardson Way. And a row of 'Kanzan' outside ICBC on 3rd Avenue and Stewardson Way. I was there because Douglas Justice added to our map the long row of 'Shirofugen' on Stewardson Way from 3rd Avenue to 10 Street, and I was going very near there in the evening. These photos were taken from the Columbia Square Mall at Royal Avenue. In another day or two, these will look good. Scattered around the mall parking lot are around 10 'Shirofugen'.
Which one? I've zoomed in on the first photo and the one that was across the street from the shopping centre.
We had some time on the way to a rehearsal in New West on April 20, managed to find a little excitement, even if these were past their prime. 'Kanzan' This beautiful low-grafted (ungrafted?) 'Kanzan' is at the Massey Theatre on Eighth Avenue at Eighth Street. Really, for such a beautiful tree, it gets no respect. On the same property is another 'Kanzan', not doing nearly as well. And there is a row of 'Kanzan' across Eighth Avenue. On Seventh Avenue, between 4th and 5th Streets, are 'Kanzan' on both sides. The street looked beautiful. Good thing we were almost to our destination when we passed these 'Kanzan' on 3rd Street next to the park at Queens. 'Shiro-fugen' Back on Seventh Avenue, there was one very nice 'Shiro-fugen' on the block with the 'Kanzan', between 4th and 5th. 'Shogetsu' Here is a 'Shogetsu' on 4th Street between Fifth and Fourth Avenue. 'Ama-no-gawa' This counts as 'Ama-no-gawa', on 8th Avenue west of 10th Street. Farther down Eighth Avenue, between 5th and 4th Street are around four 'Ama-no-gawa' street trees.
