First posting in 2008 20 Whitcomb cherry trees were blooming 80% in west side of Tisdale Street between 45 and 49 Ave., Vancouver.
Who knew there were so many nice Whitcomb locations! This could be a festival favourite for 2009 (I've already mentioned this on a few others - I think Gonul is going to keep track of favourites candidates). [Edited by wcutler] Actually, it IS a festival favourite, but the favourite was named as having Accolades, not Whitcombs. I think the photos below are from Ash, not Tisdall, but are on the street along Tisdall Park.
* Finished - Whitcomb & Somei-yoshino - Oakridge, Tisdall Park at 48th Accolades and Akebonos on Ash, in Tisdale Park, Ash from W 45 to W 49th. They could both be in bloom at the same time in 2008, though the Accolades might normally have been out earlier.
Re: Accolade & Akebono - Oakridge, Tisdale Park There are numerous varieties of cherry and plum trees in and around the perimeter of Tisdale park. It was a beautiful sight on my last visit of April 7. This series of photos show the transition from March 18 through April 7, with the peak being around March 26. The petals are now beginning to confetti the street. The exact location of these trees is the blue pinpoint on the map.
Re: * POSTED - Whitcomb & Somei-yoshino - Oakridge, Tisdall Park at 48th There seem to be Whitcombs at this park along the street on Ash, and Somei-yoshino and Akebonos on the north border of the park off Tisdall. The trees that are open look like Somei-yoshino, and I don't know why I'm calling the others Akebono except that Somei-yoshinos are open now in Vancouver almost everywhere.
Re: South Cambie Around Oakridge Mall Posted on April 18,2008 Ukon Started blooming! There are a lot of Ukon around the parking lots of Oakridge Mall Shopping center at the corner of Cambie and 45th. There are row of Ukons on both Cambie and 45th. Also I realized cherry trees in the center of Cambie Street between 41st and 49th are Somei-Yoshino trees. They are different from Akebonos on West side of Cambie. It's a bit too late to report because they are finishing! Now it's very hard to find extra petals on Akebono. But shape of the flowers are little different. Somei-Yoshino Akebono
Shirofugen - Oakridge, Cambie Boulevard south of 49th These have been reported to be looking beautiful now. Photos are coming soon.
Langara Golf course There are Ukons in and around Langara Golf course. There are 2 very big Ukons between Golf course and a residential building next to Golf Course. There are some Ukons and Kanzans next to the parking Lot. There are some Ukons in the Golf course. They were very beautiful with many wild Aviums in the bush.(One Ukon became wild in the bush, too) Also there are 2 Ichiyos in the residential building at the corner of Alberta and 49th. There are lots of Kanzan on 49th and nearby streets.
I found something like Pink Perfection trees at the SW corner of 45th & Cambie street. They are at the court yard of St. John Ambulance building. There are about 7 trees. You can see vexillate filaments in the flowers. You can compare them with Kanzan on Cambie St. Ukons are beautiful around the parking lots of Oakridge shopping Mall. On Cambie with Kanzans ****** On 45th Ave.
These Shirofugen started to bloom 10 days ago, and full bloomed at the centre of Cambie Street south of 49 Ave. now.
You can't tell by the colour any more, as these are really finished, and the shape isn't all that convincing, but they do have vexillate filaments, four phylloid pistils and some serrations on the sepals. The last photo shows the phylloid pistil growing into a little leaf, the way Shirofugens did last year, but this year it's the Pink Perfections and Shogetsu that are doing that and I haven't seen it on the Shirofugens (maybe it's too early).
I haven't posted 3 Kiku-shidare-zakura I found. One locates at the garden of the house on north side of 49th near Tisdall St. (721 W 49th) 2 locate in the garden of the house(975 W 46th) at the NE corner of the Oak St & 46th On my memo there is one more tree in the garden of 816 W 48th. But I have no picture. Pictures are taken on April 24, 2008.
Re: Oakridge -- Fall colour (Photos taken on October 20th, 21st and 22nd, 2008) Cherry trees around Oakridge Mall were beautiful. Pink Perfections and Somei-yoshino became red. Ukons became more orangey colour. Some Shirotae which locate rather shadowy place became yellow. But Kanzan and Akebono Hadn't changed so much yet. Now they must be beautiful.
Tisdall Park - FIRST POSTING OF 2009 First posting in 2009 These Whitcombs lining the east side of Tisdall Park on Ash St north of 49th Ave are showing about 40% blossom.
Whitcombs are getting pink now! Whitcombs on Ash Street beside Tisdale Park started blooming. Also there are 2 whitcombs in the park. I found 2 rather big Accolades in the garden of the condo on Ash street near 45th. They have just started to bloom..
Somei-yoshino - Oakridge, Cambie St from 39th to 49th On almost every block along the stretch of Cambie from 39th to 49th, there is one or maybe two Prunus x yedoensis 'Somei-yoshino'. Outside Oakridge, there is a row of younger Prunus x yedoensis 'Akebono', for comparison.
Ukon - Oakridge, Cambie at 45th The row of Prunus Sato-sakura Group 'Ukon' on Cambie north of 45th on the west side of the street is in full bloom now. I included the white car to try to show how not white these were, but the photo doesn't demonstrate that at all! They do look a bit yellow, and I think they will become more yellow before they fade back to white. You can see a nice street of Kanzans in the background of the second picture.
On April 28 Pink Perfections around the building at the SW corner of Cambie and W45th were blooming. They have greener leaves than Kanzan even when they start blooming. Pink Perfections around the building made the contrast against Kanzans on Cambie. (Left: Kanzan Right: Pink Perfection) Young Ukons (not grafted) around the parking of Oakridge Mall (NW corner of Cambie & W45th) were beyond the peak bloom. center parts were getting red. They were quicker than ones in Langara Golf Course and Churchill & W49.
April 28 The Parking of the Langara Golf Course were beautiful with Ukons and Kanzans. There are Ichiyos, Kanzan, Avium and Avium Plena(just started to bloom) in the Yard of the residence building at the SW corner of w49th and Alberta St. They were beautiful. *****************************************Ichiyo Avium*********************Avium Plena
It's too long since I saw these Kanzans on April 27. I think they ran from 46th to 49th on Fremlin, but they may have gone a bit north of that.
The Shirofugens on the Cambie median south of 49th are looking quite pink now (May 10, 2009) in the photo - they didn't seem that pink when I saw them. I forget how far south they go, but it's many blocks.
First posting 2010 On the north side of 57th at Hudson are nice privately planted 'Akebono' on both corners. The single tree is on the west corner and the three trees are on the east (actually on Hudson). Across 57th is a single Korean Hill Cherry. [Edited by wcutler - don't learn that - we think now that this is Sargent Hybrid.]
The two trees on W. 41 and Willow that were identified as Ichiyo have started blooming on March 31, 2010. This is later than the other Oakridge Ichiyos on the South Van Manor grounds at Alberta and W.50, and the Ichyios in Sunset at Fraser and E. 54, which are already in full bloom.
The Ukons are out at Alberta and W. 50 on March 31, 2010. Four urbanites are in the YMCA's parking lot on the east side of Alberta; two country cousins in the rustic Perimeter Path of the Langara Golf Course (near the entrance where Alberta Street dead ends).
The grounds of South Van Manor on west side of Alberta Street, between W. 49 and W. 50, has three Ichyios in full bloom on March 31, 2010. A lone Shirotae is also in bloom in hidden seclusion around the back.
