Here it is, confirmed to be 'Beni-shidare', so I can make it appear on the map now. It's nicely situated. There's another in the back yard, visible from the street.
(This was from April 4th) Down from the intersection of Tisdall and 45th, towards Oakridge Mall, is a nice little row of, I believe, Akebono trees. They are blossoming very well in wonderful clusters, with only a few buds still waiting to bloom. There are also more Akebonoes if you turn left down a back alley. ________________ Brandon Leung, Cherry Scout
(From April 4th) Here's a little picture walk around Tisdall park! We start on the west side, the northwest corner near Tisdall and 46th. You'll see two Akebonoes right by the sidewalk and then a small row of more Akebonoes (UPDATE: I looked at a past posting and apprently some of these are Somei-Yoshino; many of these, as seen in my pictures, do have whiter petals) down a path into the park, all trees very well in bloom. Then as you walk on that path to the east side of the park bordering Ash street, you'll come upon a whole row down the street of Whitcombs (I believe these are talked about in another post below). They aren't so picturesque right now though; a few are in bloom and clustered together, but many are waiting to bloom and many petals have fallen off (maybe because of the still somewhat cold weather?) Though by the end of the street, by Ash and 49th, there will be a few small Akebonoes (I think). But once you turn right, going along 49th back toward Tisdall street, you'll see two large Akebonoes very much in bloom. _______________________ Brandon Leung, Cherry Scout
I took a long walk this morning and found many cherry blossoms around the neighbourhood; I'll start with Laurel street, beginning at Laurel and 54th. Down Laurel street from this intersection, you'll see a long row on both sides of the road of alternating Whitcomb and Akebono; they are all in bloom too so it's a great sight (the Whitcombs are looking much better than the ones I saw in Tisdall Park). Though along the street, there are also a couple of cherries not in bloom yet. I suppose they are just late bloomers and I'm pretty sure they are cherry trees; they have distinctive horizontal lines on their trunks. _____________ Brandon Leung, Cherry Scout
Next are a couple of beautiful Shirotae at Oak and 49th next to the gas station, fully in bloom and even with leaves sprouting out. Then we'll go along Fremlin street. Up between 45th and 44th are some Akebono, one private tree I believe (one small Akebono even has an identifying tag for it!) _____________ Brandon Leung, Cherry Scout
(From April 9th) Then going up Laurel street from 44th, I found a short alleyway with a nice Accolade that was sprouting out of a backyard. After, I kept going up Laurel, but then took a short diversion at 43rd to Fremlin again, where at the beginning of a cul-de-sac, I saw a private Akebono tree. When I started going back towards Laurel, I noticed another alleyway and saw a Tai Haku tree in another backyard, blooming and even showing off its distinctive copper coloured leaves. _____________ Brandon Leung, Cherry Scout
(From April 9th) For the final stretch, I walked up Laurel, turned at an alleyway and found myself on Willow street. Going down Willow, I came upon what looks like a privately planted Akebono. Eventually, after more walking, I found myself going down Tisdall street and at 50th saw another, probably private, Akebono. _____________ Brandon Leung, Cherry Scout
(From April 11th) I was walking up Fremlin again to check out a tree I saw when I found some new trees at Fremlin and 47th. Right after turning right at this intersection you'll see a house with a nice Yae-Beni-Shidare, I believe, in bloom. Then down the street, by Willow and 47th, you'll see a couple of equally as nice Akebono in front of another house. But wait, when you turn onto Willow, you'll see—a great row of Akebono, old ones and two young ones at the end! _____________ Brandon Leung, Cherry Scout
(From April 11th) In front of the JCC's (Jewish Community Centre) main entrance (on 41st), are great looking Akebono with very green leaves. And when you walk down 41st towards Oak on the same side as the centre, you'll see another Akebono sticking out of a hedge. _____________ Brandon Leung, Cherry Scout
(From April 11th) There are a lot of Cherries around Oakridge Mall! First, in the parking lot next to 41st, the one with a big 'Bay' sign, are two Akebono on the right side of the lot. Then on the left side of this lot, by a direction sign (and by the old Zellers entrance) as seen in the picture is a Shirotae. Then if you go back to the right side and walk around the mall, past the side with another bay entrance, Langley Farm Market and the VPL, you'll come across a walkway and near it you'll see a group of Shirotae (more easily viewable by a bridge connected to the walkway). Following this walkway, you'll come out into the Safeway parking lot and if you go out to the corner of the lot, by Cambie and 45th, you'll see rows of Ukon down Cambie and down 45th (these have been talked about in a previous post). They aren't in their best state right now though; some are blooming, but many are still in their buds; I'm sure they'll bloom more later. Then going down Cambie towards Oak, they'll be Akebono down the street, by the side with the windows to the food court and the Gap. They're not the best examples as many of their petals have fallen off, though you can get nice pictures of the fallen petals on the ground and the leaves are still very green and nice to look at. When you get to Cambie and 41st, turn to your left and there will be a few Akebono, which has been talked about in a previous post. _____________ Brandon Leung, Cherry Scout
(From April 11th) Now this will be more stuff posted about before; down Cambie street, at the intersection at 41st, are two Snow Goose in bloom in the middle of the road. Then down Cambie towards 49th are many Akebono lining the middle of the road. _____________ Brandon Leung, Cherry Scout
(From April 11th) Along 45th, down past the Ukon, by the intersection with Ash, are some Akebono. Then if you turn into Ash street and follow it, you'll see some Shirotae by some apartments I believe. Also, in the alleyway next to the nearby Peretz Center on Ash, is another Akebono growing from behind the St. John's Ambulance building.
(April 12) At Tisdall and 54th there is a great private Shirotae next to a house. Down 54th, at the intersection with Ash is another private tree, this time a big Akebono. If you go up Ash street to 52nd and turn into the cul-de-sac there, you'll see a private Beni-Shidare with nice pink petals. Coming back out of the cul-de-sac back onto Ash, go up to 50th and another Beni-Shidare will appear (whiter petals than the 52nd one)! Keep walking around to find yourself at Neal and 52nd where a big old (and private) Ukon will greet you. Just, if I remember correctly, two houses down from the Ukon, down 52nd towards Heather, will be a private Shirotae in front of a, of course, japanese-esque house. Then go to Heather and walk down to Sir Winston Churchill Secondary; right on Heather and 54th, on the school grounds, you'll see a small, yet beautiful, Shirotae.
Tisdall Park's Whitcombs are in full bloom along the west side of Ash, north of W. 49 at February 14, 2015.
Pole walking in the rain reward! Sendai-shidare on the north side of W. 45, at a T-intersection with Ash Street. Ash dead-ends here because Oakridge Shopping Centre looms ahead. Best access is southbound on Cambie Street to W. 45 and turning right at traffic lights. The tree is just past the Ash intersection, nestled between Akebono companions on both sides. Sweeping down past peak bloom on March 19, 2015.
The Ukon trees on the northwest corner of Cambie and W. 45th, are starting their bloom, March 21, 2015.
A row of Shirotae trees in full bloom on March 26, 2015. Along the front yard of building complex on east side of Ash Street, south of W. 45th. Right behind the Oakridge Shopping Centre and near the Sendai-shidare on the north side of W. 45, west of Ash.
The Ukon trees running along Cambie south of W. 44 to the corner of W. 45 and then westward, are in full bloom at March 30, 2015. A neighbouring Kanzan at NW Cambie and W. 45, is starting its bloom.
There are new planted Shirofugen alternate with withered Shirotae on north of West 48 Ave west of Oak St to Hudson St. There are also several mature Kanzan on the south side of West 48 Ave.
I don't know when these 'Whitcomb' on Ash at Tisdall Park came into bloom, but they're still looking good.
Two Choshu-hizakura cherry trees are blooming at the NE corner of Montgomery Park on West 43 Ave, west of Oak street, Vancouver. Located in front of a house at 1033 West 43rd Ave, Vancouver, Google map: Google Maps
Here are two 'Ukon' in full bloom on the west side of the Oakridge Mall Shopping Centre. And a particularly grand 'Yae-beni-shidare' on the left and 'Beni-shidare' on the right, in the yard of an apartment building on Tisdall, west of the shopping centre. These are both well past their best - there are still a lot of flowers on the double one ('Yae-beni-shidare') but they're almost white now.
The 'Kiku-shidare-zakura' at Laurel and 42nd that Anne Eng posted on April 13, 2013 is in full bloom today. I thought it looked not bad, but it looks better in Anne's photos (see Oakridge) - that could just be the photographer, though Douglas Justice did say at the Blossom Biology talk last night that this cultivar doesn't usually make it to a 6th year.
