Last week I bought a flowering jade plant for my boyfriend for christmas. It is beautiful and already flowering! Before learning how to care for the plant I gave it a generous amont of water. I then read that during the winter I should only water it monthly. Will my plant be alright, or have I doomed it by over-watering it one time?
it should be okay. i'd let the soil dry out completely before watering it again...which will be anywhere from 3 to 5 weeks, depending on the size of the container and what type of container it is. if it's in unglazed clay, it'll dry out a bit quicker; if it's a glazed or plastic pot, then it'll take a bit longer for it to dry out. did you repot it? if not, you may want to do that right before you give it to him...use cactus soil and an unglazed pot that has drainage holes...you can leave it unwatered (after repotting) for a couple/three weeks and then do a thorough watering (add water in small incriments to make sure all the soil is moistened and stop adding more when you see the water just starting to come out the drain holes) jades don't need very frequent watering and in winter they need even less. they're succulents and store water in the trunk/branches and leaves. i usually water mine once a month in the warmer months and then every 6-7-8 weeks during the winter.
