Hi all, having some issues with my 3 year old Acer griseum. It had die off on the top this year which I trimmed off. Now the leaves are not a vibrant green and there is wilt. I am nervous it’s Verticillium wilt which has no cure as far as I understand. Will the experts let me know what they think and any suggestions on saving it.
Hi, the wilted, yellowing leaves don't look like Verticillium to me. It looks more like water or soil. Usually a well established griseum is pretty tough. (3 years is not well established). We have had a tremendous amount of rain this year, and a 10-year old wild-collected sapling started out the year looking a lot like yours. It's OK now. A larger, really well established griseum had no problem with the wet. However, a 'Golden Lucky' planted 2 years ago, lots its entire top. It was pretty chlorotic, but it's also hard to tell whether that's real chlorosis or just variegation, lol. I would cut back on watering, and make sure the tree isn't planted "in a bowl", for example if landscapers just plonked a nursery plant in without knocking out the original soil and backfilling with local soil. Good luck, -E
