My question is: Would this cultivar work in a large container? Half oak barrel size. If I purchase a six foot speciman with a burlaped root ball approx. how many years could I keep it in a container? If I plant it in a container could it be part of a mixed planting? Thanks, WCG
It will work for awhile. Beeches are slow. How long potting medium used lasts may be major determinant for longevity of scheme. It's 'Rohan Obelisk', actually.
One note of caution, our experience at our nursery is that Fagus tends to "slow down" and underperform in containers, particularly when their roots are in contact with the container. You might find the growth to be lessened by growing in a container -- but that might be a good thing if you prefer a smaller tree. If you wish to have a larger tree that is not inhibited in its growth, then planting in the ground will be better. Good luck, Brian
