First posting in 2008 Akebonos in Melbourne Park on Vanness, not far from the Joyce Skytrain Station, should normally bloom at the end of March.
Re: Akebono - Renfrew-Collingwood, Vanness Ave at Melbourne Park These have been in full bloom for a few days now, looking wonderful. This picture is from Sunday, I don't have any better at the moment. That's not all, though. Not all of them are akebonos. There are a few Shirotaes which are not yet in full bloom. And this morning on my way to work I noticed that at least one of the trees that I thought was a Shirotae, actually doesn't have double flowers (the other one next to it does). I added two pictures from my cellphone camera (I was going to work) to help identification, I'll replace them with better ones in the afternoon.
Re: Akebono - Renfrew-Collingwood, Vanness Ave at Melbourne Park Great. Thanks for the timely posting, Andrew. I think the white ones are Tai Haku - huge single blossoms, leaves emerging bronze-coloured?
Re: Akebono - Renfrew-Collingwood, Vanness Ave at Melbourne Park You're absolutely right, it is a Tai Haku. I couldn't get a good picture due to its location, I'll try another day. There are three Shirotaes in various stages of bloom (but none past full bloom) and one Tai Haku, as well as about twenty Akebonos that are a bit past their prime.
Beautiful block of Akebonos on Austrey Ave. between McHardy and St. Mary school, S.E. of Joyce station. These blooming cherry trees are currently visible on the =>Google Maps image.
Washi-no-o (eagle's tails) trees in bloom at Nootka and 25th Avenue on April 20, 2008. On west side of Nootka, 7 trees. On E. 26th Avenue, 2 trees. Fragrant flowers with ragged top edges, and prominent stigmas.
Kanzan blossom are beautiful on this area even though the roads are under construction with a mass of fence, open roads and dust. Remarkable life of Kanzan! Reported date: May 1st, 2008 Location: On Rupert St. between Grandview HWY and E29 AV Status: 100% blooming on the west side and 80% on the east side Location: On E22 Avenue between Rupert and Windermere St. Status: 100% blooming on both sides

Re: * POSTED - Kanzans - Renfrew-Collingwood, Rupert from E 12 to 29 I took pictures of this area in the evening on May 1 for only my collections. (at 27th & Rupert) So pictures are not good. But there are fabulous raws of Kanzan with fantastic view of mountains. But there is no 12th Ave there. They finished at Grandview HWY.
Three Shirofugens at school, SE corner of Nanaimo and 37th Avenue, along with four Shirotaes finishing on May 5, 2008.
Clive Avenue - FIRST POSTING FOR 2009 First posting in 2009 I think these are Whitcombs. The branches were too high and the wind too strong to zoom in on a flower that wasn't moving. There are 13 of these trees on Clive Avenue, between Spencer and McHardy Streets, one block southwest of Joyce Station. Access is via Vanness Ave. It was gloomy weather ... photos taken wearing hat, scarf and gloves!
Queens/Wellington There are five older Whitcombs on Manor Street between Queens and Wellington Avenues, only about 25% blossom out so far. In the next block, on Wellington from Manor to Reid Streets, several large cherries (not sure which cultivar) stretch across the street to form a canopy. This promises to be a splendid display, though no sign of any flowers yet. Edited by wcutler 2011dec30: Here's a google street view of the Manor 'Whitcomb' location.
A Shirotae is holding its own, at the busy northwest corner of Grandview Highway and Renfrew on April 13, 2009.
One of the Washi-no-o trees at Nootka and E. 25 has blooms, which are already falling on April 13, 2009. The fallen flowers show the ragged "eagles tail" petal edges.
Re: Washi-no-o - Renfrew-Collingwood, 25th and Nootka Here's the map for these Prunus Sato-zakura Group 'Washi-no-o'. The pushpin is the location of the favourites; there are more Washi-no-o trees at the other green marker.
Wendy asked me to go get a pic of the cherries on Austrey between McHardy and Joyce Streets because they're on my way home from work, so here they are - they are clearly Akebonos, and clearly stunning: Laura 3:)
Re: Akebono - Renfrew-Collingwood, Austrey from McHardy to Joyce I'm trying to remember to give botanical names, so Prunus x yedoensis 'Akebono'. Here's the map.
Washi-no-o finishing its bloom on April 23, 2009, west side of Nootka, north and south of E 25, and on E. 26 east of Nootka.
The Kanzans on 40th from Wales to Clarendon are only on one side, but they look very nice. I think it's Akebonos on the north side.
