On the south side of Price Street, to the west of Joyce, there is a tree that I thought was a 'Kanzan' on first glance. I was going to skip it, but then I had second thought when I noticed many of the leaves are green. But now I am doubting my second-thought again, because the photographs seem to show more bronze-green than green. So I am including it here just in case. Further down the block across from Carleton Park (on the north side of Price Street), there is a 'Kiku-shidare-zakura' in the front yard of a house. And going back towards Cariboo Park, on the north side of Tanner Street to the east of McHardy Street, there is another 'Kiku-shidare-zakura' in the front yard of a house.
You were right the first time. All those 'Kanzan' leaves will start to turn green now, and the flowers will start to fade too. It's easier once you have seen an already identified 'Pink Perfection', particularly if it's near a 'Kanzan'. 'Pink Perfection' is a tree that you know will never grow up to form an arch over anything.
I am surprised these haven't been posted before (not on the map). There are seven nice 'Shiro-fugen' trees in front of the Broadway Church on Broadway at Slocan Street. And on the side of the driveway of the church along Broadway, there are five more young 'Shiro-fugen.'
Well, who ever heard of Bursill or Horley! I noticed some pink as I drove by last week, stopped by to see what was there on April 20. It looks like 'Kanzan' run from Earles to Rupert on Horley (based on what I can see on Google street view; these photos are from Bursill). Growth from the trunk on this lovely young tree is avium. I didn't actually drive down to Moss, but it looks on steetview like a nice street of 'Kanzan' on both sides from Horley to Euclid.
Whitcomb are blooming 40% on Clive Ave from Spencer St to its east end today. They bloomed 30% 4 days ago. They are one week later than in 2015, but 3 weeks earlier than average date of the past 10 years. Because Whitcomb bloomed with other spring flowers all over Vancouver, I believe we will have early cherry blossom season due to super El NiƱo in 2016. The cherry blossom may last 2 months in Vancouver from now to April 24.
At the northwest corner of Penticton and N Grandview Highway are three good looking Ukon trees, inside the park fence.
'Kiku-shidare-zakura' as street trees?? Well, they won't be interfering with any power lines. I'm glad to see that the map blooming date is correct. Thanks.
Here are two lone 'Kanzan' trees along the north side of Grandview Highway, either way from Windermere. I'm not usually interested in single trees of this cultivar, when we have hundreds forming canopies over our streets, but these are unique in their way. This one outside the Great Canadian Superstore, west of Windermere, is clearly planted on its own roots, as all the growth from the ground has 'Kanzan' flowers. I wondered if it had been coppiced, but the original trunk is still there. And this one in the middle of the next block east is just a good-looking tree, in spite of its having what should be too many limbs emanating from the same place on the trunk. It seems to possibly be not grafted.
This city has planted in Slocan Park, in honour of the VCBF 10th Anniversary, three 'Akebono', five 'Shiro-fugen' and six 'Snow Goose'. We could use photos for our map when they come into bloom in the spring. Here is the city's map of the location.
This city has planted in Earles Park, in honour of the VCBF 10th Anniversary, three 'Akebono', five 'Shiro-fugen' and one 'Snow Goose'. We could use photos for our map when they come into bloom in the spring. Here is the city's map of the location.
This city has planted in Beaconsfield Park, in honour of the VCBF 10th Anniversary, three 'Akebono', and four 'Shiro-fugen'. We could use photos for our map when they come into bloom in the spring. Here is the city's map of the locations.
It looks like this park at Crowley and Oben is going to be very nice. It's not quite up to Favourite status yet, but in a few years it should be.
"Power cherry scouting" with Wendy Cutler today yielded a double-row of 'Shiro-fugen' on E27th between Nanaimo and Penticton. They are big, old, numerous and healthy-looking. About to bloom, too. Who could ask for anything more?
That was major excitement - two BLOCKS of big old 'Shiro-fugen'. I don't think that happens anywhere else. 24th and Highbury in Dunbar comes close, but it's only one block. These trees will look all white in another week. Then in three weeks, they'll look all pink. Eventually, the leaves will be all green.
