Ama-no-gawa has a clear sightline to the whole North Shore Mountains in a front yard on the east side of Rupert (where E. 16th would be, if the meridian were not). A second tree, planted closer to home, enjoys no such views. Both just past peak bloom at April 19, 2021.
The three Avium Plena trees on E. 18th (between Nootka and Lillooet) are in full bloom at April 19, 2021.
The mature Shiro-fugen trees on both sides of E. 27, running two blocks east of Nanaimo, are nearing full bloom at April 19, 2021.
Wendy will have to check on the Jugatsu (flower of the 10th lunar month) in Kerrisdale, because Autumnalis 'Rosea' is already open at December 17, in the mid-11th lunar month. In front of the McDonald's on the north side of Grandview Highway, east of Renfrew.
Hi all, season has started! A little ashamed that I didn't think of checking till the past weekend due to the cold weather. Autumnalis Rosea at the Wendy's along Boundary near Grandview is just starting to bloom. Whitcomb at Queen's Court are finishing. Whitcomb along Manor near Queens are in bloom and so are the ones along Clive between Spencer and McHardy.
Found these which I think are Akebono. Near Rupert Station. Adding them to the map. Someone fixed a tree swing like thing but I'm not sure that's a great idea. Oh and there's also one tree along Rupert between Grandview Highway and 22nd Ave that's starting to bloom. Will take a closer look again soon as it seems early for Kanzan.
Was impatient. It is indeed an Akebono in the midst of all the Kanzan. There are 2 more nearer to Grandview Highway between 14th and 15th (like that you can see the mountains too), 1 in the middle divider further south and 2-3 more between 22nd and 29th also along Rupert. There's also a repeated pin for the row of Kanzan along Rupert for 17 blocks between Grandview Highway and 29th. ID 1194 is the same as ID 4124.
Thanks. I've removed the later one. You'll have to talk to @Lisa L, who didn't think that a single marker at a location two blocks away from a tree she was looking at was close enough. The now single 1194 marker covers 17 blocks! I'm on the side of fewer markers for a set of the same trees.
Haha.. well, I added a marker that states Akebono amidst Kanzans so hope that helps :) There are 5-7 Akebonos along that Rupert stretch. They look smaller and younger so they may have been replacement plantings? I'm not sure.
Here are other Akebonos spotted this morning. Inside the Collingwood Village rentals (a friend used to rent from them and we could always go in as long as it's open even though it's private property?), a beautiful grove of Akebonos. Have it as my facebook picture since years ago :) And the ones along 23rd from Kootenay stretch very far down the block. Just started so maybe give them a week. And last tiny one near Worthington and Falaise Avenue, at the park playground.
So the Akebonos did not get the memo and did not wait a week. The ones along 11th near the film studio are out. There are a few other trees which may be a different variety as they're only just budding. The ones along 23rd between Cassiar and Kootenay are also out. For ID 7565 (post stated we could use a picture of when these are in bloom) So are these along 25th between Boundary and Kootenay, before the Kanzans. And there are a few young new plantings at the field at Dieppe Place. The big trees are along the road.
Thanks Wendy, here are more photos that you may have to add, if it's convenient. I went by again yesterday as it was sunnier and the lighting was better. ID 3756 Snow Goose at Slocan Park are still very young. (Marker also has a note to add pictures of them in bloom.) Third photo shows a furry bee enjoying to the right of the flowers so for those who are afraid of bees, this is probably not the best place. I didn't note that I was supposed to check for Akebono and Shirofugen as well so I may have to head back another day for them. Takasago around 21st Nootka and slightly further along 18th between Nootka and Rupert are all in bloom. As for the Washi-no-o along Nootka between 26th to 24th, they're not all blooming at the same time but a few are in bloom. Shirotae around the area are also out. This lone young one along 20th near Lillooet is not on the map yet but there are others along 21st which are on the map so maybe I'll leave it out. Somei-yoshino at the South side of Windermere Secondary are out too.
Will add this to the map. Windermere pin states Kanzan but there are now more Akebono than Kanzan planted. Mostly young ones planted after 2016? Stretches North from to about 16th perhaps. The City's tag is still on some of them and says 2018/2019.
Shirotae and lone Akebono along 21st near Windermere. There are cherry trees at the Renfrew Park Community Centre. I'll add a pin. These large ones are probably Akebono and at the entrance, whereas the small one looks to be Rancho? That's along the road at 22nd. Also got pictures for ID 3754 Akebono. They're further west, near the road Slocan and 29th.
Tried to find these ID 3347 so I can add a picture but think they're gone. There's a new townhouse at the specified address with a sign that says there are units for sale haha..
The eve sun was lovely on these three trees along 21st the other night. a pin says they are Takasago. Trees themselves look a bit unhealthy, lots of moss but the flowers are magnificent.
April 9, 2022 Location: Between Nooka and Windermere on E18th Ave Type: Takasago?? Pinkish blooms some are darker some very pale pink. Looks like peak bloom. Another tree at Nootka and 21st Ave. The tree is covered with moss so it doesn't look healthy but the flowers are still beautiful.
Ukon at the Van Tech Grass Field was in bloom when we walked past. There were also two interesting ones where the bark was shiny, but I'm not sure whether they were grafted? Not sure what they are as the only single white recently seen are umineko/snow goose but I don't recall them having shiny bark trunks.
You're right, and they are usually low grafted or maybe even not grafted, but this does look like a 'Snow Goose' grafted onto a Birch Bark Cherry. It makes me angry that the Parks Board uses my money to support people who would do this.
'Kiku-shidare-zakura' is in full bloom in its yard on the north side of E. 15, between Lillooet and Windermere, at April 16, 2022. It's looking better than its house, which is under renovation behind it.
