Our condo strata would like to replace a series of poplars planted into an area between the building and a concrete retaining wall. The trees are 10-12 yrs old and we are worried their root system will go into the concrete/drainage system soon. The area is about 8 feet wide out from the front of the building and runs the 150 ft length of the building. There are 5 large poplars- each 20ft high that provide great shade in the summer, but some people are saying they are too big now. The trees are also very messy with pitch and browning leaves all summer long on decks etc. Questions: 1. What time of the year is the best time to dig out the trees? 2. What are suggestions for replacments? Dogwood and ash are two specifcs I've thought about. 3. Where do we find an arborist for consultation? Thanks for your help. Agnes
You are probably right about the poplars. These trees can be quite agressive and messy. Removing trees is possible any time of the year -- after leaf-fall may be less traumatic, though. Hiring an arborist may be a good idea if there are questions about tree health or the disposition of these particular trees. You can find a list of certified arborists at the ISA (International Society of Arborists) website. I think dogwoods are an excellent choice for this area, but stay away from the eastern species (C. florida) and the native (C. nutallii) as they're disease prone.
