    Somei-yoshino
We drove along Williams Street, finding an old somei-yoshino tree standing in South Arm Community Center, with a spectacular shape.

    Is it Akebono?

In Garry Point Park, there are about 10 cheery trees growing among other Akebonos, but different than Akebonos in that
    • the young leaves are coming out with flowers
    • the number of flowers are lot less than Akebonos
    • It's twigs are more like Ranchos.

    ARE THEY AKEBONOS?

I don't know. They look like not too healthy 'Akebono, but aren't 'Akebono' supposed to have hairs on the pedicels? Do you have any photos that show whether or not there are hairs? Maybe you could get good close-ups of the flower parts and post it in Ornamental Cherries. Not that we'll be able to answer you!

    Yama-zakura??
There are five cherry trees just begin to bloom. The buds are rather small and open flat single white. Leaves in bronze color emerge about the same time. Three to four flowers on the corymb. It is located at the intersection of Minoru Blvd and Acheson Road, in the back of Richmond High. We think they are Yama-zakura

    This Kanzan just can't wait!

We saw the first kanzan flower of this year on Sunday after noon, on No. 2 Road near the intersection with Granville Ave.

    Tagasago
We saw four takasago trees, two on the lot of "'work Safe BC" on Westminster Highway [edited by wcutler 2012jan28: we think these are 'Ito-kukuri'] and the third on 6191 Azure (intersect Mara) and the fourth on 6259 Azure. The first one, visible on Westminster (photo #3) is about 20% open; the other tree further inside the drive way is smaller and is about 60% open (photo #6). The tree on 6191 Azure (photo #5) is about 50% open. The tree on 6259 Azure has the best shape but is just beginning to flower (photo #7). Although there are some lichens and mosses on the branches, they are all in apparent good health. [Edited by wcutler 2012jan28: the map points here for 'Ichiyo', which we determined later is what is shown in the second and third row, on Azure Road.]

Taihaku flowers shoot out from the root of a Takasago
Strangely enough, we found a very young Tai Haku cherry with flowers shooting out of the root of the Takasago tree
at 6259 Azure (see photo #7 of our previous posting). Apparently it is grafted there. Interesting attempt.

OK, you get the award for strangest tree posted this year on your tree with the 'Tai Haku' rootstock.

But I don't think the trees are 'Takasago'. If you have 'Kanzan' starting to bloom, it's too late for 'Takasago' to be starting up. Those look more like 'Ito-kukuri' to me, and the timing is better for that cultivar. Here's the one we're calling 'Ito-kukuri' posted in Victoria-Fraserview for comparison, and Douglas Justice's photos in the 'Ito-kukuri' ID thread.

I also wonder if the 6191 Azure tree might be different again. The stamens in the 4th photo look heavier, or the anthers more yellow, and the leaves more bronze.

I've copied that posting to the Ornamental Cherries forum - Is this Ito-Kukuri? Double pinky-white, later than Takasago - to try to get an ID, so let's discuss ID questions there, then come back here with the decision.

    Ichyo
After taking a closer look at the trees that we posted on 4/19, we quickly agreed that none of them was Takasago, because the flowers are much larger and are composed of more than 20 petals. The flower buds are pink, not as dark as those of Takasaso and they bore no hair on the stems and leaves.
The ones on 6191 and 6259 Azure Road are should be Ichiyo, as we observed all the characteristics described in the VCBF ‘s book. We counted 22 petals on the flowers from both trees.

    Ito-kukuri
We are not as sure about the two on Work Safe BC lot on Westminster Highway. The photos taken on 4/19 remarkably resemble the picture on p.43 of the book and the one you took last year. The flowers are 5 to 6cm in diameter, open not as flat as Ichiyo and petal clusters are somewhat fluffy, wavy. We counted 25 and 26 petals on each of the flowers from each tree. The petals are broad, especially the ones on the outer rim. But we are not too sure about ragged edged and prominent, darker thread-like veins. Of all the pictures that we can compare with, Ito-kukuri appear to be the closest one.

    Is this Pandora or Yama-zakura?

On 7251 Minoru Blvd, we saw five trees in full bloom. They stand upright, spreading and pretty high on their rootstock. Single flowers, mostly white with very, very faint pink tint on the edge of some of the flowers. (We counted six petals on a few flowers.) And there are apparent gaps between petals. Some fine hair inside the red bract. Small leaves, bronze-green in color appear with the flower. All together, these trees show many of the characteristics of Pandora. But the time is much too late for Pandora, isn’t it? If not Pandora, then what is it?

Four Pink Perfection trees on a side of Chatham St. in front of Ichro Resturant are blooming with some complete flowers. However, two of them are not healthy and partly taken over by root stalks.

    Is this Pink Perfection, too?
One tree on Moncton St right in the yard of Steveston Museum is blooming now. The color of leaves are brown just like Kanzan but its stamens have vexillate filaments. Is it Pink Perfection, too?

Thanks for posting those Chatham 'Pink Perfection'. I was thinking about them when I was photographing the trees in Downtown at False Creek. The Steveston Museum tree is 'Kanzan'. Those things in the centre are sort-of filaments, but not vexillate (flag-like). You can compare the amount of stuff in the centres of the Chatham St trees - more like little flags on all the stamens. Also the leaves are green, and the tree shape more rounded.
