'Ukon' at the north entrance to QE Park (from Midlothian/Ontario - several older ones in a row, some outside the fence and some inside - they probably were there before the fence was.
I think the fence went in because too many people were sneaking onto the pitch and putt golf course. That is around the bottom of hole 2 and far enough away from the main building that you could start there and nobody would be wiser :)
You got me doubting so I walked through qe on my way home. Tbe 6th hole is just above where the trees are, not the 2nd.....and the fence does separate the course from the street ....someone was looking for his golf ball over the fence in all the weeds, kind of close to the Ukons on the pitch and putt side. Those Ukons, on the golf course side, have a lot of ivy growing on them unfortunately .
North side of 29th Ave., halfway between Prince Edward and St. George, behind the school, I believe this is 'Ukon' - 'Shirofugen' in background for comparison (in mountain shot):
Note: These blossoms really seem too white to be Ukon, but I don't know what else they could be. Note that this tree is not on the map.
As I was tromping around yesterday at QE, I took some pics of the Ukons, and some of then had that beautiful striation on them. Not all of the flowers, but some of them. Does this mean that they might be Gyoiko?......or is it a reflection of the cold then warm winter/spring we had ?? where some of them petals developed the striation. They are absolutely beautiful right now if anyone wants to take a look.... The poor trees in the rough that have all that Ivy over them, but they are still blooming!
Yes it is on the map, as 'Ukon'. Note that trees on the map only show in the list on the side panel, but no blue markers are showing right now. The popups appear without the marker, though.
As you come up the park off the west side 33rd entrance and Cambie, there are a lot of new trees planted......since the old Somei Yoshino is now gone :(.... Lots of picnickers yesterday. There was a tree that looked a lot like the Ichiyo that was in bloom at VD. It has that single leaf modified phylloid, you can see the green bit in the centre that looks like it is wanting to be a single leaf instead of the female style that it should be. Can anyone confirm if this is an Ichiyo?
I think 'Shogetsu': long pedicels, green leaves when mostly in bud, mostly in bud now when 'Ichiyo' have been open for a while, fimbriate petal margins. I remember several 'Shogetsu' labels when they were first planted, so that is influencing me too.
We have not been calling all the trees with some striping 'Gyoiko', as most of the 'Ukon' seem to have some striping, particularly as the flowers age. Hmm. There were Shogetsu's close by, but this one was different. and the fact that the new growth is green at the moment. The shogutsu at VD and at UBC parkade is still showing tight buds and copper/red new growth....but this is south facing slope at QE, so perhaps they are further along..... Sorry I am getting my Shogetsu and Shirofugens mixed up. Shirofugen is what is at VD and UBC parkade.....the Shogetsu at VD died . The Shogetsu would be a better fit I think with the green new growth of the leaves, but the Shogetsu at UBC we saw on Saturday in Nitove had more frilly, indented leaves... This particular tree at QE, that I thought was Ichiyo had so many of the flattened green phylloids in the centre that it really looked a lot like the Ichiyo at VD that also had those flattened green phylloids. ..........I shouldn't do any of this posting before 2 cups of coffee in the morning......
The Kiku zakura was very tight in bud. This is the group of 3 trees that I had no idea what they were in 2021......I had forgotten again what they were when I was checking them out yesterday. It's so nice to be able to go back in the forums postings (#309, 311, 331) and see others photos and ID. I really like how dark the buds are and the green bits in the middle of the flowers before they fully blossom! This is the group of 3 trees, to the south side of the dirt path that leads from the Duck pond to the traffic light/bus stop on Midlothian. Will need to go back and check them out as they continue to blossom. .........I was also looking for Wilson warblers at the duck pond, but no luck.....I must be too early for there arrival :(
Do you mean the path that leads to the covered bus stop at Clancy Loranger way? I'm asking because there is another bus stop near the corner of Cambie and Midlothian, and I'd like to find these trees.
Hey Laura, I can't remember if it is covered, but it is the stop opposite Clancy Loranger. Phoenix gymnastics is on the SW corner, Little Mnt Ball field is on the NW corner, and behind the bus stop I'm thinking of, on the west side, are stairs leading up to the dirt path. If you go up the stairs, onto the dirt path. Just past the big tree that recently came down, to the south, getting closer to the duck pond and the road that goes around QE there is this small grove of 3 trees. It is a bit of a distance south of the duck pond but not on the same side of the street as the duck pond still on the side that the stairs are on. They are already leafing out, and looking more like a crab apple, so you may not recognize them as a cherry tree and the flowers are sooo small it was only because I remembered seeing them there a few years back that I was wandering around that area looking for them. Yah, I decided on my walk this morning that the 'Shogetsu' were already open in that area. And the buds had that 'Shiro-fugen' brownish pink colour. And the tree seemed a little more robust than the 'Shogetsu' nearby. I'm going to say 'Shiro-fugen'.
How about going back in two and/or three weeks to see if the petals have fallen off white ('Shogetsu'), or if the flowers are still pretty frilly and are pink ('Shiro-fugen') with some pink petals on the ground.
Well, the festival recently received an email from Kimiyo Kamimura saying she has told us previously that the trees at 18th and Ontario are 'Gyoiko'. Douglas Justice replied: So I have renamed them on the map. It seems like a slippery slope to me.
