Well, I know other must be collecting some pics of this prime maple time of year. Here's a place to post your eye candy feast of new growth and stunning colors. To start, here's a shot of Shishigashira:
Yes, beautiful picture slickhorn, I've looked at it about four times since you posted! It's going to be two or three weeks before there is anything spring-like to photograph here, but I will add something as and when.
In the Pacific Northwest, my Katsura, as were those of other people, was the first to open. The following photos of Katsura, Ueno yama, Shin deshojo, Orange Dream, Olsen Frosted Strawberry, and Komachi hime were all taken on the same day (March 5, 2010). I find it interesting that Olsen's Frosted Strawberry and Shin deshojo are already breaking open. The most any of my other reds have done is swell (if that). There are a variety of cultivars on the property that have not yet opened (about 35+). I expect my trees will stall for awhile as we had two days last week that dipped very near freezing. We'll see what weather and time bring. First three are Katsura, next two are Ueno yama, the next one is Shin deshojo, the next two are Orange Dream, the next one is Olsen's Frosted Strawberry, and the last two are Komachi hime.
There are some Acers that take my fancy straight away, some never. Orange Dream I bought but gave it away, its not one of my favorites. I saw the Katsura and loved it right away. Lovely images winter haven!
Here are some pix from the first maples to leaf out this year. The first few are in my new mini greenhouse and are further along than most maples outside.
Here's a slideshow with photos of various maples at Greer gardens in Eugene, OR. I spent an hour in the greenhouses enjoying the maples while it rained outside, so I had time to take some good photos of the variety of smaller trees available from Greer's. They have alot more bigger trees available. Those are some really great pictures sasquatch! A wonderful display! How lucky you are to be able to visit Greer's in person and browse through their selection. It's too early to see anything leafing out here (except in my dark garage - d'oh!) and the local nurseries don't carry a very large selection - ten or maybe 15 cultivars if I'm lucky - though they do usually have fairly good-sized trees. I've received a few trees in the mail through Greers, and have always been impressed by their size. I'd love to be able to visit them in person, along with many other west coast nurseries, but alas. Hey nice to so many great photos. Thanks for sharing the great trees you've seen so far this spring. So far, my Shishigashira hasn't set seed, but perhaps this year. Lucky southerners! I start my spring in sweden when i use the snowblower to clean my patio so the sun can dry the patio wood. Still, spring in northern sweden is 2 months away. Anyway this seasons pictures taken yesterday, one acer ginnala in ice and snow. And the patio,must get a bigger snowblower.....
Those are impressive pictures André, I wonder whether any other forum participant have a comparable amount of snow at this time of the year. On the other hand your maples, specially the small ones, are well protected under the snow. Gomero
I dont worry so much over the cold as i do for rodants this year. I´m a happy camper this year, a lot of seedlings on their way up.
JAPONICUMS Some of the earliest plants to leaf out in my garden are Acer japonicums. This would be a concern, since we are prone to late frosts, but japonicums have adapted a very neat strategy for staying warm - fur!! The hairs on the new leaves serve as a protection, but they are also a curiosity, often beautiful, and something to wonder at.
It feels like spring now in the UK, with sunshine and warm weather, and finally the maples are beginning to wake up.
Here, in the Loire valley, spring seems to be earlier than in britain. The fisrt one to leaf out was "Little Princess" (more than two weeks ago), followed by "Katsura". Here is a photo of these two taken yesterday, and some flowers on a plain palmatum in the ground :
