This is the VanDusen tree, labelled Takasago, but which Wendy thinks is Jo-nioi in Post #34, finishing its bloom on April 28, 2010.[Edited by wcutler 2011jun06: VanDusen has changed the label to 'Jo-nioi']
2011 - the festival favourite 'Whitcomb' all along the east side of Marguerite between King Edward and 26th are in bloom now. The VCBF Blooming Now page shows a photo from 2008, as these haven't been reported here yet this year, and it was practically dark when I saw the trees today. The 2008 photo was taken March 18, so just about the same timing as this year.
Those 'Whitcomb' trees on the east side of Marguerite at Nanton (on the right here) are still looking fine, and the 'Accolade' trees on the west side of the street are in bloom as well. The 'Beni-shidare' trees at VanDusen are just days from full bloom. There's a little sign saying they're the tree of the month. Deservedly so. They should be perfect for Sakura Days there this weekend. What's with the festival getting everything right this year (the 'Akebono' display at Burrard Station today for the Cherry Jam, and then these trees for the weekend)!
This morning, I passed by the playground at Shaughnessy Elementary School (on W King Edward & Alexandra), and was surprised to find that the 3 Accolades were still in bloom, even though most of the other Accolades in the Lower Mainland were well-finished. Re: Shaughnessy-VanDusen 'Jo-nioi' I went to VanDusen Garden and saw this peculiar cherry yesterday afternoon. I took only three photos because of cloudy weather. It seems to me that Wendy's photos and one of mine match the description of 'Jo-nioi' in Kuitert's book. I didn't pay attention to its fragrance.
Hey, Joseph, I took four photos and it was raining! Actually, I took more, but they were were blurry or wet or something. But we did notice the fragrance from maybe eight or more meters away.
Re: Shaughnessy - Jo-nioi? Just for the record, now that we're getting a better idea of the cultivar timing, I'm certain that the reason I could not find that tree on May 8, 2008 is because it wasn't in bloom then (since Anne's photos were from April 18) and is not 'Taki-nioi'. Also for the record, Douglas Justice said in an email today that he has just seen the tree that Joseph and I posted yesterday and agrees on the 'Jo-nioi' ID "for sure".

Re: Shaughnessy, what cherry? Sargentii hybrids. You can see a lot of indecision about what we should call them and photos and locations in the Unknown sargentii hybrid, was Syodoi - mid-season, single-white, double-serrated thread.
I searched the blogs and map so if this is a duplicate please delete as this part of the city is not my normal cherry scouting location and I took these photos as this is a graceful large tree with complimentary colored heath/heather plantings creating a stunning pastel garden visual. I think this is 'Shidare-zakura' (Prunus pendula) due to the slightly flared open lighter pink single blossoms and prominent pistil - maybe someone locally could have a second look. I had a reminder set to go look at some trees at 35th and Maple, so I drove by the 'Beni-shidare' (which is a shidare-zakura) Deborah just posted. Either it was hard to get up close to, or I was awed by the setting and forgot all about examining it closely, but the only photo I took was this one with the heather, because Ron B commented on some other thread about how nice some of these trees look with that kind of landscaping. This is the view on Cypress. On the way, though, I was waylaid by a total of seven 'Mikuruma-gaeshi' every direction from 39th and Laburnum. They're in the usual condition of this cultivar in Vancouver - trunks look terrible, but branches and flowers look pretty good. The 'Kanzan' display here will be very nice within the next week (third photo in this group). There's a good-looking private 'Mikuruma-gaeshi' (first private one I've seen) on the NW corner of Cypress at 35th. This one is particularly floriferous and has especially large blossoms. The trees I'd made the note to come see turned out to be 'Kanzan' - they'll look great when they open in another week or so (third photo in this group). These two 'Akebono' are still worth a look, and make a nice display in front of this lovely house on 36th east of Maple. Here's one 'Yae-beni-shidare' mid-block between Roxburgh Crescent and 33rd on Marguerite.
I was hoping to see the 'Jo-nioi' on the Rhody path at VanDusen, but not a single blossom is open. The yama-zakura to the left of it is open, however, and that was exciting for me. The flowers have narrow petals like the Korean hill cherry, and in general it looks a lot like the Korean hill cherry I think I saw yesterday - red bud scales, bronze-green leaves - but no hairs on the pedicels. I didn't find a label on this tree. In back of the group of yama-zakura, 'Jo-nioi' and 'Somei-yoshino' is an old 'Umineko' in bloom. One group of 'Beni-shidare' (Pendula Rosea) in the cherry grove is very past its prime and very pale-looking, but very nearby is another group that still looks quite pink, with blossoms still in good shape.
I too was in awe when I took the photos of this tree and forgot to examine closely - truly a beautiful tree and location!
Cherry trees in bloom at VanDusen Garden on April 5, 2013 right before Sakura Days. Outside of VanDusen's fence, along the west side of Oak Street, south of W. 33rd are three mature trees: two Sargentii Hybrids and one Akebono.

As you can see from Anne's postings, that's quite a variety of cherries in bloom at one time in VanDusen. I guess if I got those on the map, there would be more than 12 locations total in Shaughnessy, only five of which are outside the garden. There are cherries in Shaughnessy - we have to get them posted first. Here's a start, in the neighbourhood south of VanDusen, pendula or 'Shirotae'. Right across from the garden on 37th at Osler is a 'Beni-shidare'. Around the corner on Osler are two 'Shirotae', one of which is this nice one. All the rest of these are on 38th, going west from Osler, all in the same block. 'Beni-shidare' 'Yae-beni-shidare', I'd guess one of the festival Birthday Blossoms from 2011. 'Beni-shidare' 'Yae-beni-shidare', likely another Birthday Blossoms tree. There are a few Prunus avium on the block that are not obviously trees that were intended to be something else. And one 'Akebono'. Walking east on 38th from Osler, at the cul-de-sac, is one 'Shirotae'.
The three Kiku-shidare trees in VanDusen (Great Lawn) have started their bloom on April 11, 2013, beside Tai Haku (white blossoms, 3rd photo) and the Beni-shidares.
This is the Yama-zakura tree at the Rhodo Walk in VanDusen on April 12, 2013. The blossoms clearly have RECURVED SEPALS. Have we determined that Yama-zakura should have recurved sepals? Is that no longer only a Prunus avium trait? Check the Yama in Killarney now!
