I have for bonsai purposes a young plant given to me as a Silver Leaf Maple. However, I am fairly sure this is not a Maple(family Acer). The Acer family have 2 leafs that come off the stem in pair opposite to each other. This plant has a leaf that appears in shape like a maple leaf (palmate). However, the leaf come off the stem singlely and alternate along the stem. The top of the leaf is a nice medium dark green and the underside of the leaf a soft white(Silvery) color. I have worn the pages of my "A guide to Field Identification Trees of North America" but have not found anything that appears to be the same as what I have. I do have photos but feel that this not a plant that will be hard to identify by those in the know. Thank you for any suggestions as to what I may have.

Liquidamber leaves can look like a maple. The leaves are alternate. L. orientalis has small leaves, however they are not silvery underneath. A pic might help.

Yep, White Poplar. I don't think it'll make good bonsai, I've never heard of bonsai poplars anyway!
