I wondered if that was going to be easy. I don't think it's A. spinosa, though, at least from the photos I've seen of that. But from what I've shown, that should be a win, because the drupes look identical, so I'd have to show you the whole inflorescence and then, there it is. I think it's Aralia elata, because that was what Ron B implied in this thread: http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=44896. It's not the same location, but the trees look the same to me. Princeton Nature Notes says Wikipedia says the spring shoots are served fried in Japanese and Korean cooking. Gaultheria shallon has a different end to the berry, an impressed star shape rather than persisting external flower parts.
