Be prepared for a very long wait my MY was planted out in 2008 bought in a small graft 2ltr pot from the girls at H/P was planted straight out and as remained in the same spot ever since. Only over the past two seasons has it started to grow its charecteristic side branching very twisty with very strong branch girth growth, just under 3ft in height at the moment. Definately one i never ever prune or trim , would say another 3/4 years growing before it will look quite nice. Does look good when leafed up though, fall colours are nice but will only get better with age (hopefully) So far behind every one else at the moment :(
I have to agree with Houzi, Maples as Bonsai have such a beautiful form, I'm tempted to try my hand although I know it's a real art and takes years of experience. John

I'm sure it will be a long wait Roebuk,just look at this poor lil' guy ha ha though I know poor potting mix has had much to blame....looks like the side branch is dead also.Your's is coming along nicely though,kinda has a bonsai look about it.Having never visited a specialist nursery I've never actually seen a decent sized example,infact I never see MY around these parts.I think most of us here hanker after a large MY and were probably in awe of Amazing Maple's examples. To be honest,I wish the maples were later,as they were a few years back.Not only is the risk of frost reduced,also the spring display will be over before we get the nice weather to sit out there and enjoy it(though this last week or so has been an exception.)and there's not much else in the garden to accompany them. Strangely my peonies are usually in flower at the end of April,but they're still just bright maroon sprouts at the moment. Edit...actually looks like I've only one branch left ha ha...even longer wait!

Mine just keep trucking along... I think Murakumo is still on NY time (got it from Diana last spring), as it has only now just begun to leaf out, lol. The last holdout is Usugumo, and I'm starting to get worried. It looks like there are a couple of buds on it, but they haven't progressed at all; when I last scratched the trunk, the bark was still green underneath, might have to check again. :(
This is my collection taken yesterday. Crimson Queen 1 (with my dog standing guard) Crimson Queen 2 Crimson Queen 3 (the most showy so far) Shishigashira Seiryu Japanese Sunrise Butterfly Sango Kaku Beni Kawa The Beni was planted very late last year so it is taking a little extra time to bloom out. It also has some damage very low on the trunk but I got it for $20 and it seems to be doing ok.
Roebuck, I like your Kashima, that's one I need to look out for. Barthelemys ahd quite a few MY last year and when I called in a few weeks back, still had a few, about 18" tall I guess, not including the pot, but nicely branched and shaped. Your right about Amazing Maples, every picture he has posted on here is always of a jaw dropping specimen. John
John.. The Kashima is a good reliable tree always the first out and never any problems with leaf scorching etc, what i call a plant and forget tree just water. Stunning Deshojo,hope mine grows to be like yours, wish we could have 29f for just a few days would certainly get things moving over here, never mind we should have a nicer fall period though? Keep the pics coming.
This deshojo had been planted in 2003 under a Walnut-tree, it is growing in the shade from mai to november. But it is in full sun in april often losing on's colours at the top, it is particularly washed-out this year . (I never prune this tree and no watering even in summer since 2007, the only Acer i have able to support... And also zero desease ) I have an other deshojo planted in 2003 under Oak trees, growing very slowly but with a nice little shape. I like your mikawa yatsubusa. One pic begining red in april and one with discolourization now .
Full April sun has a special definition this year for us, opusoculi! It is 29C in Paris today, 26C in Normandie yesterday, everything rushing out although the Saints de glace aren't until the 13/5 or so! Funny here in Paris the chestnuts are in blossom on 16/4, though the song says "April in Paris" we laugh that it is usually May in Paris if you want to see chestnuts in blossom. But as a lyric it's not so great. :) Looking forward to getting back to the cleaner air, and hopefully lower temperatures, tomorrow.

I get to experience spring again :) Got my trees from Diana today, SO happy she found a 5g Lima Gold for me, can't wait to see it in full leaf. And I think my Murakumo is still back in NY (where it came from last spring), since it only started leafing out a few days ago, lol.

Roebuk,I like those green hook thingies you have on your containers,what are they called and how long are they? I could definately use a load of them.
Here are some Japanese maples from today. Hopefully the pictures are named correctly. I also included a couple of pictures of a plant I'm evaluating, called 'Souffrettes Red' here but that will probably change if it ever gets propagated. It's very resistant to pseudomonas and wet, stays red all year round, and has red new growth (not green as some Sango kaku do). It's a selection from a batch of seed that Ed Shinn graciously sent me. Temps are back to more seasonal but warm, 18C today, and very sunny. The "heat wave" we saw around 26C all last week -- really summer temperatures -- so all the plants have come rushing out. P.S. sorry I don't have time to fix the orientations, the uploads are very slow, and they appear correct on my computer, or on facebook for that matter. It seems to me the forum sw ought to figure our the orientation from the metatags, since other sw manages!
