Largely original medium..I slip-potted it into a slightly larger pot but it’s not done much in 3 to 4 years..to warrant increasing the potsize.. what it does produce is healthy to date..I get your drift..leave it to Autumn then change medium completely..does that sound like a good plan? I have a 6ft Beni Hageromo that grew super fast from 2ft to 6ft in 4years, nice thick trunk no material dieback and the bark colour looks super healthy..but that has slowly had less and less leaves over the past 2years..Although I notice quite a few leaves emerging from buds on the trunk top to bottom this year..I wonder I might refresh the medium on that one too and see if it improves..I’ll give some fertiliser in the meantime time..does that sound a reasonable plan?

    Thanks

I really like the Johin, I've not seen or heard of that one before... I'll keep an eye out!

How healthy/sturdy is Wilson's pink? That's a really nice colour, but from what I've read most of the pink varieties seem to be a little bit weak or picky about conditions, although I don't have any of them myself yet. Does it hold its colour for a while? Sun tolerance?
I nearly bought a Taylor a while back but didn't because of what I'd read.

Also a question for anyone with Amagi Shigure - has anyone had any difficulty with it? Mine all but fell apart very shortly after I bought it, but I'd initially put it down to the fact I bought it from Gardening Express and wasn't aware of their reputation!
While visiting an acer nursery in Leominster since then, the chap said he had also found Amagi a little bit fussy and had inconsistent growth rates, susceptibility to failure etc.

My Summer's Gold isn't especially gold yet in full sun. It's a fairly new one to me, what is anyone else's currently looking like?
It's still a bit more green than I'd expected.

This is a delicate cultivar as is most of the reticulatutes IMO. They need a lot of afternoon protection from the sun. I have moved mine around a few times over the years to get just the right amount of sunlight. So my advice is as much dappled sun/ shade as possible for a happy Amagi shigure.

Mine is about the same. It was a much lighter green, almost yellow when I bought it.

It's one of those I'm planning to trim. It's in the same pot that when I bought it, and it's pushing very strong growth. It gets the sun about 2 hours in late morning, but I think that "pushed up" trees have fragile leaves...

That is what I would expect from a first season with this cultivar. And tbh I think yours is looking really good. So don't fret.
Mine and others are on here.

I got it end of last year, but before that it was in a raised bed at a friend's but they were moving house. They had it in full shade for a couple of years and I only recall seeing it a couple of times - it was a nice gold colour toward the end of summer.
Considering I dug it up and planted it in my garden last September, then dug it up again in march and potted it up, then shoved it into full sun... It's not only surviving but seems to be thriving and growing very well! Very resilient.

I keep forgetting to just search for individual cultivars for comparison!

I couldn't agree more, this cultivar is a real winner in my books. It might even give Ginkgo's a run for their money in the survival stakes...... Lol.

Second flush on some Acer buergerianum seedlings, the leaves are red :

I've put my 'Redwine' in the sun, 8:00 to 16:00.

'Bihoo' too, should be placed in a more shaded spot :

But the contrast with 'Tompenburg' is nice :

'Rainbow', 'Hana matoi' and 'Butterfly' (in the evening) :

'Tsuma gaki' is already showing signs it's too hot and dry here :

Hippopottering stopped selling it because they did not find it to be reliably hardy. Mine, which I bought from them has been fine and dandy, if a little slow growing. I think it is one of those maples that is a little touchy, but if you get a healthy one on a good rootstock and it likes your microclimate, you are in for a real treat.

Not the best shot but this is Amagi shigure in late May, followed by Aka shigitatsu sawa and another bobby dazzler:

Well after last years debacle we needed to see lots of recovery to make amends , personally lost 18 trees, four semi matures in 30ltr containers the rest were small 3ltr and 6 ground growing Hanai matois and of course these were the best coloured ones as well !!!! dug the remaining ones up in the summer and re potted and they are all thriving at present , but they were well looked after during the winter time. Others that were hit were well pruned back and have bounced back amazingly thankfully. Just lost the one tree so far this year, so i can cope with this :) But all the other trees just look very healthy, so fingers crossed it should be a interesting colourful fall.

What i tend to do with the small ones i buy from Pat when they have their open days which is usually during the spring and summer months, i go and pick my own (live quite near) then leave them in the pots until the leaf drop then slip them on but remove as much of the old medium they were grown in which is usually a mixture of coir and perlite , yes it's a good starter medium to grow in but i prefer my own mixture which is just basically moss peat , j innes no3 and ground down bark nuggets. Then come the spring they are well fed/fertilized up to the end of May then left alone for the rest of the season , never had any problems with the small trees i buy from her , don't buy as many as i used too have all the trees i need now ( said that before) :):)

Well over twenty years now bought this from Pack horse farm when i first started , just a wee 4ltr planted straight out and just left it alone never been pruned just the odd die back twigs every year , but i give it a good vertical mulch every three years just to keep it happy.

This is one of those cultivars you can either grow or not !!! Did a thread on this cultivar on here some years back about ground growing versus potted , i had six a one point but i am down to my last two now sold three and one died. Just have one in the ground and one potted one which lost half of it's branching last year ,was well pruned back and seems to have recovered nicely for this year , then my ground one is completely surrounded by a purple ghost and amber ghost and this year it looks stunning. When these first came out you couldn't buy one for love nor money but they are now ready available but are a specialist tree to look after IMO ? Yes they do look nice when they are right but also look awful when they are wrong.

Always healthy from Hippo..I’ve usually picked them up when she’s at shows..I’d like to go to the open days but it’s a right trek for me! This one has taken several years to this point..actually it looks better than I initially suggested

The Johin was imported heavily into the UK from Holland over the past year and are ready available now. The Wilsons is usually a good tree mine is in the ground , but varies from year to year on how you will see the stunning spring pink colours. Last year was terrible nearly lost it to the frost, but re placed it last year with more sun and it's been a relatively good colour this year, just going into it's summer leaf now also a excellent fall colour as well. Taylor brave man:)

Yeah that's why I decided against Taylor in the end. I may pick up a Wilson's pink if I see a nice one somewhere and I'll probably avoid Amagi Shigure.

Generally I try to avoid ordering online as I like to pick out nice starting structure and have a good look at the graft. I think out of my whole collection I've ordered 6 online so far - 3 from GE, 2 died, an Anne Irene from Broadway road nurseries as I couldn't find it anywhere, Ukigumo from eBay which lasted 18 months, and then a Manyo no Sato from Larch Cottage Nurseries to replace the dead one from GE. Larch Cottage and Broadway road both sent very nice healthy plants.

Although come to think of it, that was true until I discovered Hippo in February... 17 so far!

I had seen shirasiwanum Sensu last year but couldn't find it anywhere, then checked last night and I see Hippo have that as well. Very tempted to pop in an order for Sensu and Johin now.

I guess there are worse addictions in this world. That's what I keep telling my partner, and that's the story I'm sticking to.
