I don't know why this quote was hanging around. But obviously this isn't a point that can be made too many times!

'Koko' is amazing right now, a lot of yellow in the inner leaves, the leaves are big and often held horizontally. I got it as a tiny graft from Maillot, it still isn't completely healed though it seems to be doing well. If it keeps the characteristics when it grows into a full-sized JM, it will be really spectacular, but I suspect it will change quite a bit still. Certainly won't get planted until 2025 at the earliest.

ICE DRAGON - doesn’t have as much red in it as last year, maybe because it hasn’t been as hot or maybe the shade cloth is very effective. Seems to be good in this place, gets sun most of the day and some afternoon.

HANA MATOI - Was bare root up potted in April, appears to be doing well but not sure I’m happy with it in a grow bag. The soil seems to stay wet in this particular one and in others wet on top but dry below.

RED CLOUD - one of my partners favourite. It’s doing really well, the more shade the greener the leaves and the sun side gets the maroon colouring. This is under the same shade cloth 40% UV reducing but does get lots of sun all day and afternoon. Seems happy.

VILLA TARANTO - we both have really fallen for this one the colours are incredible; receives full sun AM and late day shade. Seems pretty happy in this spot, its still in the nursery pot but placed in this ceramic pot for now.

TSUMA GAKI - Just shining bright! I think this is its forever spot.

Maples make great gifts..I’ve only recently come to terms with parting with any of my trees..think I’ve given away 4 now lolls

It was at Elmwood Nursery near Downend, along the Westerly road. They only had 3 there when I went so worth calling if you want to grab one.
I only realised a few days ago that Extravaganza is actually 'Lileeanne's Jewel under the 'wrong' name.

I really like my Villa Taranto but pretty much everyone else's I've seen has red flushes around the outside and new growth.. mine is completely green and it gets direct sun from about 3pm until gone 8pm.

Hmmm that’s wild. Maybe different soil? Possibly incorrectly named?

One that's in a park. It stands at the corner of a patch with big Acers and other acidic soil plants (ferns, etc.) and the contrast is spectacular. I managed to take correct close-ups, showing the pinkish tones on the edges of the leaves. I's so beautiful, I'm sure someone has one and can name it. Ukigumo ?...

In-between the clouds, there's some very bright sunshine this afternoon, so before the real heat starts in a few days and frazzles all the leaves, here are a few that looked happy today.

Lovely colours! How much sun is that?
My new one I've had sat in a place that's sun from morning until midday then shade onwards. It's completely lime green now. I've found a spot for it that will instead get shade until midday then sun onwards, pretty sheltered from wind. I'd heard Moonrise is one of the more sun tolerant full moons.

Morning sun only, very wind sheltered spots. I had the larger one in full sun a few years ago it grew well but it didn’t like it..was too much.. the leaves are defo more robust than Megitsu, vitifolium and Jordan..and it has grown much faster than these.

It’s strange how the smaller one is red/pink from the outermost part of the leaf heading yellow in the inside but the larger one is more the reverse

Orange Dream today showing a multitude of colours, all pictures taken at the same time with the same camera settings.

Ok thanks! I only really have one other spot it could go for morning sun only but I know moonrise tends to be quite spreading and large if you let them, and there isn't that much space there - I was considering putting a starfish in that spot as it's more upright.

It's also quite near an autumn moon and I'm trying to mix up all the colours and leaf types as much as possible!

My Inabre Shidare is right outside the conservatory and gets lit up every morning. This was one of my first 3 maples about 8 years ago - it's been in the same pot all that time but will finally be getting it's feet in the ground this year.

    PXL_20220708_064624706.jpg

Slightly 'scruffy' Seiryu basking in the early morning sun. Oridono Nishiki to its left gets sun for a couple of hours first thing then shade rest only the day. Not quite as white/pink as last year, hopefully second flush will light it up again.
To the left of that is a little butterfly which enjoys full shade all day.

    Absolutely love those colours!!

My orange dream gets very little sun and has no interest to it at all. I've just been to check where the 8am sun is and worked out some pruning to do which will hopefully give it a little more light!

This one is so nice, so delicate. I hope I won't lose it, it's my last one.
    Acer pentaphyllum :

    acer-penta_220711a.jpg acer-penta_220711b.jpg

PS : the "turntable" is exactly 30 cm in diameters, and since it's from Japan, there can't be no mistake. So the tree as it is is about 50 cm tall...

This one is from seed, about 1,30 metres tall now. I labelled it Acer pseudosieboldianum 'takesimenses'.
Do you think it's the correct name ?

I still wonder if these seeds sown in late 2020 and that germinatated in 2021 will still bear in a few years the weeping feature of the parent tree, 'Ryusen' :

Haha, foiled by your habits ! No, but it is the correct plant. Did I send you one of these? I know I kept only one of the several I had, it got broken but is still going. Anyway it was confirmed to be the true form of Acer takesimense. Raised in rank from a sub-species of pseudosieboldianum,

I still have 3 listed in my DB, which is wrong. One went to Poland I remember, so maybe you got the other? I apparently kept the weak one, it's only about 40 cm, even without the break I don't think it would be near yours. The leaves look alike though.

Edit: went and looked at it, actually closer to a meter. Bottom of the pot covered with slugs, ugh.

I popped into a chain garden centre for a tub of Root grow and came out with heavily discounted Gwen’s rose delight, Jordan and Lileeanne's Jewel..60cm trees, a bit crispy here and there but for £8 each!! I have these cultivars already but these serve as a good back up. I must stop these impulse purchases!

This is my Moonrise, I got it last year and am not sure if this is its normal colour or if it gets too much direct sun causing stress.

It gets direct sun from morning to about 1:00 or 2:00 pm.
