I have moved to Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast. Now it's time to start scouting for cherries in my new neighbourhood.
This could become my favourite tree in Gibsons, three blocks from home. It is located on the Gibsons Legion property and is dedicated to Vi Wilson, a dart pro. The Legion is next to the Christian Life Assembly Church, so there is some serenity to the location. Seems to be my year for YBS.
Drove to Sechelt today and found more 'Yae-beni-shidare' This good-looking tree at 6484 Gale Ave N And a younger pair at 6123 Fairway Ave
Strange looking 'Kanzan' trees in Sechelt, too. This one at 6404 Sandpiper Rd And another one at 6448 Gale Ave N
'Akebono' at the Good Samaritan nursing home in Gibsons. Enjoyed by the residents. Petals coming down in the wind today.
For some reason, 'Shirotae' do not thrive on the Sunshine Coast. Here is one of many trees I have noticed.
On the other hand, the 'Rancho' look really good in Sechelt. About 12 trees at 3 intersections on Inlet Ave - Cowrie, Mermaid and Dolphin Streets.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I saw this 'Yae-beni-shidare' at 1312 Fairway Rd in Gibsons.
Let's not put it on the map. It's not going to be 'Yae-beni-shidare' for much longer - we'd then have to remember to remove it.
Another "not-so-nice" 'Yae-beni-shidare'. At Davis Bay, 5360 Sunshine Coast Highway. I am finding YBS everywhere this year.
To my astonishment, I found a row of 4 young 'Yae-beni-shidare' at the Desolation Sound Resort. This is the last place I expected to find YBS this year. The trees are planted very close together. I wish them luck.
Four 'Kanzan' at Church Corner in the old Townsite of Powell River. At Ash and Sycamore. I had to look hard to find one blossom, but loaded with buds.
Two mature 'Kanzan' at Old Courthouse in historic Powell River. Located south of Marine Ave, between Ash and Arbutus. One of them has lost the battle with rootstock. About to burst into bloom any day.
At the same location is a 'Shiro-fugen' right next to the 'Shirotae'. Just started blooming. The trees are planted very close together. Hmm...
Another precisely pruned cherry tree at Sunnycrest Mall in Gibsons. I'm calling it 'Kanzan' but the rootstock is winning. Depends on your perspective.
This is as good as it gets in Gibsons for 'Kanzan'. Thirty-six trees on Oceanview Drive. Both sides of the street from Sunshine Coast Highway to Laurel St. In full bloom now.
