Wendy Cutler spotted these 3 trees on Harry Rd, north of Bonniebrook Heights Road in Gibsons. One of them is 'Somei-yoshino'. The verdict is still out on the two trees in foreground.

I noticed this tree in the backyard of my accountant's home this afternoon.
With his permission, I was able to take a closer look at it.

    20230414 KingJudith Colt Willard IMG_2673.jpg

He told me that it was originally an edible fruit-bearing cherry tree. Seventeen years ago it was infested with moths and caterpillars, so he chopped it down to the roots.

Today it is not bearing any fruit. And it looks like 'Pandora' to me, but I'm not certain. How can that happen?
    Anyone have any ideas?

Not 'Pandora' - the calyx shape is different. Was it fragrant? It's more like 'Colt'. I don't know if there are other root stocks that could be confused with 'Colt', but that would be my guess, unless it isn't fragrant.

That's a bee - doesn't it look like the creature that stung me?

Thanks for explaining that mystery to me.
I should have noticed the red pedicels - unlike the 'Pandora' pedicels which were green.
It was not extremely fragrant, though.

Yes, it does look similar to that biter at Sargent Bay. Too bad I didn't photograph it, too.

No trouble finding petaloids on these 4 trees at Good Samaritan Canada
on Shaw and OShea in Gibsons.
Yesterday these four 'Akebono' were full of Rufous hummingbirds and a loose flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers. Not so today. Brr...

This weather is slowing down the 'Akebono' at Gibsons Starbucks.
It's taking more than 20 days to get to peak bloom from Stage 1 on March 23, 2023. Not there yet.

No mullet on the 'Yae-beni-shidare' at Gibsons Legion this year.
Very large blossoms, though. I didn't measure, but some were loony-size in diameter.

The 'Akebono' at Gibsons Starbucks is finally in full bloom - 31 days from Stage 1.
Seems to have suffered a bit in the very cold, very wet weather. I noticed what looks like water damage on a few of the blossoms. But the sun is shining and the frost might be over now.

Several petaloids visible on this tree today.
I tried to centre them in each of the photos.
