Friday March 14/25 BC Ferries Langdale — the “twisted sisters” (4 trees each in their own concrete container) Inspired by Maureen who I believe sourced them from a nursery near Victoria BC @Willard - I can’t recall name of this tree with special “contorta” branch crew person I talked to today said they are worried about moss on these trees see photos attached pls ps - I am not sure if March 14th is a bit early for flower (I can’t yet find my 2024 spring blossom pix)
Your posting from last year is at https://forums.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/threads/sunshine-coast-gulf-islands.95067/page-22#post-442296. It's 'Little Twist'. There are some related postings on the next page after that posting.
Yes, there is a good-looking ‘Whitcomb’ at the Parks Yard on School Road. It is typically the latest ‘Whitcomb’ to bloom here - but it is on public property and you can really get a good close look at it. Because it is behind a chain link fence, it is well-protected, too.
Here we go Based on my old photos — it looks like 2025 is fewer blooms in this date and last yr we had late snow see attached images w dates - March 2023 - and March 2024 compare to March 14 / 25 above earlier today interesting
in your experience — is moss in tree branches a show of ill-health etc? or part of the course of aging :) ps Fairmont Hotel Vanc spring tea is decorated in the “Nancy Drew secret bookcase tea room” (that’s what it reminds me of - you know my era :)
Check again when they are all in bloom. No, it's not supposed to be a problem. Moss looks for craggy places to attach to. Some of our huge old maples have trunks totally green with moss. Yes, I've seen photos from this year.
The only ‘Okame’ that I know of on the entire Sunshine Coast is blooming now. It’s about 10 days later than last year. See it now on Gale Ave North, near the guesthouse.
Yes! 'Whitcomb' on Wharf Road - and more than one. There are at least three more 'Whitcomb' in the yard at the same location.
This ‘Whitcomb’ has been planted in a good location and it is floriferous. See it now in West Sechelt, at corner of Jasper and Mills.
That is as far along as any 'Accolade' I have seen so far in Vancouver, actually farther along than all but one.
@Willard FYI I went by « Parkland » subdivision (of Payne Rd north of Gibsons IGA) and nothing yet at ENTRY on Woodsworth or at duck pond around on Goddard also nothing yet in the « tree with best view » subdivision above Hopkins Landing near ferry soon though!
Spotted four of these trees at condo on Jasper and McCourt in West Sechelt. I’m guessing ‘Yae-Beni-shidare’. Will confirm when the buds open.
‘Colt’ in the backyard of my accountant’s home. Just starting to bloom. 7-10 days later than last year.
