Blooming in Guildford area Sun shining through 'Akebono' - 154A St & 99A Ave, townhome complex Four 'Akebono' - 157 St & 101A Ave Beni-shidare - 158A St & 102A Ave Shidare-zakura - 159 St near 102A Ave
I've been admiring the magical tw0-colour trees in the Guildford area for many years without knowing what they are. Recently I've learned from Wendy that they are sweet cherries, Prunus avium, taking over Kanzan. These Kanzan trees started to bloom in the past couple of days. [10091 156 Street] [10108 156 Street] across the street from the above tree Young 'Snow Goose' row (8 of them) at Guildford Heights Park [154 St & 102A Ave]. Taka
These are in Bear Creek Park, 88th Ave & 140 St. 'Shiro-tae' by the playground. 'Korean Hill Cherry' in the middle of the garden area. 'Kanzan' by the east parking lot just started blooming. Very close to this, there is 'Shiro-fugen' with buds, but it's not blooming yet and I didn't take any photo.
One 'Ukon' and rows of 'Kanzan' on 102B Ave between 156 St and 158 St. Two Ama-no-gawa trees at 9940 151 St.
More magical two-tone trees in the Guildford area. 153 St & 102A Ave, two trees next to a government building, across from Tap House. One with still noticeable amount of Kanzan, and the other with the last bit of Kanzan barely hanging on. 15765 102B Ave 10238 156 St, inside a townhome complex This one is half hidden by 'Akebono' branches. And here is a questionable two-tone tree. 152 St & 100 Ave, 7-Eleven is surrounded by a dozen of 'Shiro-fugen' trees which are starting to bloom. I found one tree with two branches of Prunus avium as shown in the last photo. Does it still qualify as two-tones with both being shiro(white)?? Taka
Yes. I just included an 'Akebono' in the Magical two-tone trees | UBC Botanical Garden Forums thread, so this is right on theme, and I'm happy to have the 'Shiro-fugen' example. And these other 'Kanzan' too. But I have to go to sleep now, hope to update the thread tomorrow.
And this 'Ama-no-gawa' qualifies too, at 88 Avenue and 154A Street. These are almost all low-grafted - you can see how low the rootstock limb starts.
I went back to the two-tone trees that I posted 9 days ago. They are now covered with flowers. [10108 156 Street] April 16 April 25 [10091 156 Street] April 16 April 25 These photos are of the same tree from different angles. Some sweet cherry flowers managed to mix right in the middle of Kanzan flowers. This is the new one I found at 15439 100 Ave. Taka
Dozens of 'Akebono' on a long stretch of winding road from 151A St & 86 Ave to Spencer Dr. & 148 St. ***Must see*** 'Beni-shidare' 158A St & 102A Ave A row of 8 'Rancho' trees on 101A Ave between 159 & 160 Street Some kind of pendula is hugging this one. :) And, I saw a sad-looking 'Yae-beni-shidare' which reminded me of a Chalie Brown Christmas tree.
On this L-shaped cul-de-sac starting at 155 St & 98 Ave, there are about 20 tall 'Rancho' trees. And there are some on the next street, 154 St & 98 Ave.
[152B St & 98 Ave] Are these 'Sendai-shidare' or 'Snofozam? I thought they were 'Sendai-shidare' because of the umbrella-like shape and the dense top, however, the branches are chopped off and not natural. (And I don't like it.) I can also see the hair on the pedicels. So, now I'm thinking they must be 'Snofozam'. **Edited** These are 'Snofozam' as per Wendy's comment below.
I'm confused too. This seems too late for 'Snofozam' - in bloom at the same time as 'Rancho'. But the calyces look more like 'Snofozam', particularly in the first and third blossom photos. And if you saw hairs on the pedicels, go with 'Snofozam'. Those too cultivars are next to each other in our book (which is organized by blooming time), and when I simplify my blooming date chart, they're going to have the same blooming dates. Nothing is following any rules this year anyway.
Hi Wendy, Ok, 'Snofozam', it is. The ones at VanDusen Gardens still had flowers two days ago, and the ones in Surrey definitely have hairs on the pedicels. I edited my posting above and replaced the photos with proper names. Here are 'Snofozam' and 'Rancho' on the same day (this weekend) at VanDusen.
Nice-looking tree, doesn't appear to be top-grafted. I can't say the same for the tree to the left of it.
Another non-grafted 'Akebono' [98 Ave & 153 St], with fresh injuries. :( This one is very old and beautiful, however, some branches were chopped off recently.
[9940 151St, a condo complex] In the middle courtyard, there are about 20 mature 'Akebono' trees. They are past peak, but the petals on the ground create a beautiful effect. 5-6 'Tai-haku' trees alongside the entrance driveway of the complex. They are actually in the backyard of the next-door property. And one badly pruned and unhealthy-looking 'Akebono' across from 'Tai-haku'.
Young ’Snow Goose' at Guildford Heights Park (10176 154 St) just started to bloom. A week ago last year, the flowers were almost gone.
