FrankenTree OK, so what do you do if you have a bunch of scions left over from grafting? And maybe a large understock? How about grafting 10 different cultivars to a single tree?! We'll see what happens....
By the way K4,6weeks after grafting, they're only just now taking....I know why,it's a long story, had some failures but learnt a lot.I'll give you my tales of woe when I know the final tally ha ha.
Oh yes, a naming competition would be fun! Hope things work out OK for you. I have failures too, you know. Everyone does...
kaitain, i have been following your forms and just want to give you props! your grafting setup is legit and cant wait to try my own someday, been propagating rhododendrons - next is grafting my maples!
Kaitain4, I have noticed that you graft yours low instead of hi, can you elaborate a bit more?. Any pro and con for low-graft vs. hi?. Tks, Steve
I think low grafts look better in general. The grafting scar is closer to the ground. I do graft weeping cultivars high, as I think it helps to get them elevated off the ground a little.
Morning K, Thank you for your great input. - I picked up your tip about re-graft if the first time it didn't take. Thus i would think if I grafted high, then I will have more chance to re-use the rootstock if it failed. - I also have another quick question regard to 'cleft' graft. It seems a bit difficult to line-up the cambium from the two joints precisely using this tech. so may I use the '8-points' graft on 'cleft' by angle the scion a little bit?. Thanks again, Steven
Thank you for your prompt reply. I will try and i will keep you updated on this. I have few rootstocks from those failed grafts last year that are quite short now but they may be a good candidate for these experiments.
Morning Kaintain4, From your thread about examining when the rootstock is ready after we try to get them out of dormancy. Is there a rule of thumb of how long they are inside until you can begin graft them?. I try to look for white root tips after one week of inside the garage underneath the heater (temp between 50-60) but don't find it yet. The pot look dry but the pot is still not very light. I stop water them and will not until at least a week or two after grafted. Do you think I can begin around the second week or wait a bit longer (sorry I am a bit anxious)?. Thanks.
